The Alum Rock area has some gang activity. East San Jose is hit and miss. Stay west of downtown and you should be good.

Southside use to be the hotbed for gang activity. Julian/101 area by San Jose highschool was another. By Overfelt HS area was another. This was years ago, so I'm not 100% sure now.

Actually south still does have some gang activity. It gets nice again the further south you go.

Pretty much all areas of San Jose will have gang activity, though the further west and south west you go the less prevalent it will be. The worst parts will likely be the downtown area, east San Jose from Tully on up to McKee, and south SJ anywhere near Monterey Rd.

Story and King, the part of town that used be known for gangs, has actually be revitalized a bit. Not that I'd want to live there, but it's probably not the worst area anymore. If you really want to be around chain link fences, cars parked on the lawn, cut-off Ben Davis shorts and pulled up socks, you'll have to go a little more east, closer to White Rd.

A good number of the "cholos" who lived in these areas 10 years ago have moved out to places like Stockton and Modesto where housing prices are cheaper. Stockton is the new East San Jose.

A friend of ours just had a gang shooting happen near their house. They live right off San Tomas Aquino & Payne. Close to Campbell. Very nice area.

So no area is void of gang activity it seems.

Not as long as gang members have drivers licenses. I think the only thing that San Jose has going for it in terms of gangs is, though it is well known for gangs, it still has one of the lowest violent crime rates in the nation. It just makes the areas look run down.

Actuallty is San Jose well known for gangs?? When I lived there it didn't seem there were too many gang issues. I think most of San Jose look nice, except for the areas already listed.

When I was growing up in and around San Jose, it had quite the reputation. Especially the East Side. But again, since SJ has such a low violent crime rate, it probably hasn't been much of a black eye the past 10 years.
