Default Best Place to Live in Santa Cruz

I'm heading out tomorrow to Santa Cruz for 5 days to find an apartment to finalize my move there. I notice on craigslist there are a bunch of different areas like capitola, soquel, aptos, scotts valley. I am a 23 year old artist who likes to have nearby entertainment but can't afford a crazy rent- most willing to go to 1700 for a 2 bedroom. I want to make sure it's a pretty safe place as well. Any suggestions so I can help narrow down my search?!

Those are all different cities, most of them sought after by suburbanite types because they aren't like Santa Cruz. Stick with SC.

Capitola is also a different city, yes, though it's more like Santa Cruz than the others.

There are some dicey areas of Santa Cruz; the boardwalk area for one. Capitola, Soquel, and Aptos aren't as 'happening', but a mellower choice for a place to live.

I'd also like to know what the best areas in Santa Cruz are. I will be relocating in August for my job. I have been working from home for the past 1.5 years while living in Oregon. I have accepted a new position which will require me to be in the office, which is in Downtown Santa Cruz.

I'd like a very family-friendly & safe location as I have small children. I'm not opposed to a commute, but do not want to have a drive longer than 30 minutes.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

I'd stay on the west side near mission. East cliff is also an ok area.

Aptos is really nice. Santa Cruz is nice, but kinda sketchy. Beautiful homes, but if you like homeless people on main street...then move there. Clean, not that many trashy people, beautiful, safer and it's calmer.

I would move to the outskirts....The downtown looks great, but the city treats homeless people like they're sent from Jesus Christ himself. They're everywhere! It's absurd. My mom was told the virtues of heroin by one upstanding person half passed out on the side walk...in broad daylight! We were going to stay the afternoon to explore, but we decided to leave early and head down to Big Sur early!

If you have to live in downtown Santa Cruz, move to the west side. It's not trashy and its beautiful.
