My friend dropped by unexpectedly to visit me for about 2 weeks -- what are some things to show her? I was thinking SF, but how about in SJ or around the SV area?

Great America is closed, but Gilroy Gardens is open and they'll be doing their Holiday Lights thing. Say hi to my brother for me.

San Jose has the Tech Museum, ICA, the SJSU campus along with the King Library, an opera that gives San Francisco's a run for its money, and a good old-fashioned California display of excess courtesy of Santana Row.

The Santa Cruz beach boardwalk (rides and attractions are open only on the weekends during the winter).

Santz Cruz isn't exactly close by.. anything within 1 hr drive of San Jose?

PS: What does it mean, "say hi to my brother for me?" -- was that a joke or do I know you? *confused*

The drive between Santa Cruz and San Jose is less than 1 hour - maybe 45 minutes with decent traffic .

Oh my goodness, there are tons of things . . .

Hakone Gardens in Saratoga is beautiful, and you can stop for sushi downtown afterward.

Quicksilver State Park has nice trails and a really interesting museum (Almaden).

The Bay itself if beautiful. I think the walking paths by Mountain View/Palo Alto are great, but the Don Edwards Educational Center is fun too.

The history park in downtown San Jose (Senter Rd) is pretty interesting.

Ardenwood Farm in Fremont is nice and often has great concerts.

Rancho San Antonio can't be beat for a walk.

Of course there is the Winchester Mystery House too and the Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz.

The redwoods in Big Basin are beautiful, but that is a good 45 min. A train ride through them via Roaring Camp Railroad is nice too and a bit closer.

Castle Rock State Park is fun for climbing.

Thanks for all the valuable information! I will be visiting San Jose soon and love outdoor activities. I'll be sure to check out your suggestions in advance.
Peace
Linda

I have to vouch for Rancho San Antonio being the spot for a wonderful hike or walk.
