Default What is the best ALL AROUND high school in Santa Cruz County?

I know, you don't have to say it, I asked for a simple answer to a question that requires a lot of subjective variables. Still, I'm wondering what other people consider the best high schools in the area and why.

I visited Santa Cruz High and Harbor High and was less than impressed. Although between the two Harbor High seemed less horrible. ( That could be because of the pregnant girl with lots of hickeys on her neck I saw screaming at her boyfriend in spanish right in front of the doors at Santa Cruz High as soon as I got out of my car. Or because of the guidance counselor I spoke with who told me no one really cares about sports or anything at school everyone just "does their thing"...)

I'm not looking for national science team champion school. But I'd like one where most kids graduating attend a 4 year university. I'd also like a school with a lot of school spirit. Meaning a place where the kids and parents go to the football games and the kids go to their school dances and functions.

I almost don't dare to ask for it, but what I'd really like is a nice wholesome high school in a community that values family.

So.... what is your pick?

I am wondering the same thing and was hoping someone might answer your question. We are moving back to Santa Cruz in a week.

I believe the Pacific Collegiate Charter school in Santa Cruz was recognized as the third best public high school in the nation:

Pacific Collegiate School

Best High Schools: Gold Medal List - US News and World Report

They use a lottery system to get in, and it is fairly small. I think the focus is more academic than on sports, etc. but I could be wrong.

The problem with these lottery charter schools is what to do when you kids don't get in. If you can't afford private, they end up in the sub par public high school in the area. Not a great option. I wish California gave more priority to funding their schools.
