It is nicknamed Silicon Hills " a mini SF and San Jose " wrapped up in one city. How is the job market? What does folks from California think about this place? It supposed to be really Liberal too!

Austin is a little like a piece of California dropped into the middle of Texas.

Indeed... I went to Chico State. This is one of the reasons I moved here...

It's like Chico in a BIGGER scale.

However it'll take you a while to get used to it!! I have been here for 2.5 years and I moved from San Jose. It's indeed mini CA and I guess by now, the "locals" are used to the californians moving here.

It's not bad but no way you can compare the scenery and the beauty of CA.

My 2 cents,
Carlos

Am single, love nightlife, want to be close, but not right in it, want it to be safe, good schools, nice friendly people. Live S of LA now, and am considering moving to either somewhere S. of San Franciso maybe San Jose or somewhere closer to the water. How close is SJ to the water? Have lived by the ocean most of my life and think I'd really miss it if it were not around, but also have other priorities. Also considering either San Diego, or Austin TX, or somewhere in TX.
Anyone know of these areas, any input?

The job market in Austin is very competetive, especially in the tech field. If you aren't transferring with your company, of have the right connection to get you in somewhere, it's very tough. Even worse if your degree is from out of state.

Many of the 'tech' businesses here are branch offices of SV companies, so when things are not going well in SV, it's about the same here.

How about San Antonio compared to Silicon Valley/San Jose? Probably more off than the original topic of this thread. But just wanted comments on how far off.

Aside from the really hot weather in the Summer, you will love Austin.

I would not compare Austin to Chico, but maybe San Diego/Socal with a Nocal political slant Austin is very laid back and liberal. A blue dot amidst a sea of red ones. Like the previous poster said, a little peice of CA in TX. Hence why it is also one of the most expensive spots in all TX.

Great food, great family oriented outdoors oriented lifestyle (Lake Travis in really nice) with a great music and downtown. Great for singles as well. Solid tech employment compared to other cities of its size.

I would recommend tabling all your stereotypes of TX and checking it out for a few days before making the move.

You must be kidding to say that Austin is like a mini SF and San Jose...that is like comparing NYC to San Diego. I can tell you from my experience of living in Austin last year that it is the most back woods, unsophisticated, non-progressive, conservative, low wage paying, behind times in technology, non-diverse, most boring city I have ever experienced! All I can say is that you will never know what a place is like just from listening to others experiences. You will never know just by a mere visit...however you will know if you move there and explore it on your own. Austin is really marketed as this really great place but I can assure you that it is not.
I personally could not imagine leaving San Jose to move to Austin, TX! OUCH!!!!!!

I read it has the worst young-woman-to-man ratio in the nation. The runner-up: San Jose. I don't have any first hand experience though, but it's hard to imagine there's a worse place than Man Jose in that regard...
