I am considering relocating to San Jose. I am into road cycling, and was somewhat concerned regarding the population density and traffic in the area. Is it a good place for bicycling?

San Jose proper will not be as much fun for road biking due to the aforementioned density. You may want to consider the South County areas of Morgan Hill, Gilroy, etc. as there are more areas to bike along (Old Monterey Hwy. comes to mind as a possible route). If you're up for a bit of a drive, you can head south on Hwy 101 and ride along Hwy 1 along the coast. I saw quite a few road bikers this weekend driving back home to Monterey.

If you want a more bike friendly town (in addition to affordable) you might consider further up north like Portland, OR. VERY bike friendly.

Traffic doesn't bother me when I bike, but then again I'm not a Lance Armstrong type biker in the first place. I bike with a hybrid. I like to use the bike routes along the Guadalupe River, they are traffic free.

Default Bicycling In Morgan Hill

If you have a chance....it's a must to bicycle around on Uvas Road in Morgan Hill. Very beautiful, you won't be disappointed.

That's awesome. I've been looking for new terrain to conquer on my bike. I'll definetly check it out ASAP!

Santa Cruz has a HUGE population of road bikers and some great bicycle shops. It's a great place to start your journey up highway 9 towards Big Basin, and of course, North on highway 1 toward San Francisco, and South towards Monterey, Carmel, and Big Sur... I think it's the best place to bike in the country.... and the roads and drivers are all, for the most part, biker friendly... Check it out for a weekend getaway sometime!

My husband and I used to ride our bikes along the Los Gatos Creek Trail (I think that's what it's called). We would ride for hours... it's a great ride. It's off of 85/101. The exit is not Bernal... the one right after. Lots of bikers on it but not so bad that you can't enjoy your own ride.

Cycling for commute is not as viable due to distance and frequent intersections, though the roads are generally wide and accomodating. The areas on the edge of and outside the city as great for biking, though.
