Do you know of an excellent public alternative school? We might be moving back to the Bay Area. I really want to enroll my daughter in a "hands on learning", "experiential", "whole child approach", "alternative" elementary school. It would need to be in a good school district because my son is in middle school and for middle school and high school, I want high quality accademics. We cannot afford private school given cost of living in the Bay Area is so high already.
I have been checking school district websites, but I would love to hear real peoples experiences and information.
Thank you!

Unfortunately, the really good public school districts attract parents willing to pay top dollar for real estate, so it turns out that what you would have spent on one private school tuition is embedded in the price of, say, Palo Alto/Gunn or Saratoga housing.

You may well be best off in an area which has soem excellent public charter schools as well as a reasonably affordable private school that offers exactly what you seek for your daughter. Given the preferences you state, I think you're most likely to find that "whole child" approach in one of the excellent private schools in Berkeley, perhaps at The Academy. Your son could take advantage of an excellent Berkeley middle school and high school when he's older.
