San Jose Vs. San Francisco for a 24 y/o batchelor going back to school.
Howdy all, I'm currently in the military and want to get back to school when I finish my enlistement in late 2010. I'm looking at the bay area. I was born in Danville and lived in Pleasanton for a while (as well as Alabama for 10 years). I'm open to the San Jose area but am more familiar with the SF area. Just wondering if SJSU would be recommended over SFSU or UCSF? Just general eduction (an AA degree) is all I'm concerned about for now. I have very little college under my belt. How is the general living for somene of my age in SJ? Is there stuff to do, a decent night life, pretty ladies ( ) etc?
Also, how far is the commute from SJSU to down town SF?

It's called "Man Jose" for a reason.
To be fair, there is more urbanism in SJ / the South Bay than SF snobs will admit and the ratio is not completely unthinkable. But at the end of the day, if I were a 24 year old young buck, I'd want to live and go to school in the City and not the South Bay. Better ratio, more social activities, more interesting inner city and outer district hoods, just more density and opportunity. My two cents ...

By the way that's spelled "bachelor" (no "t")

Of course if you like the Asian ladies, the South Bay is OK. Problem is, they tend to marry quite young and since we don't know your race, not all of them are hip to interracial dating.

Not necessarily - common knowledge/experience for just about everybody around these parts.

Some info
First of all, UCSF is an all graduate degree school, they don't offer any undergraduate degrees.
I attended SJSU and really enjoyed it. Depending on where you live in San Jose it can be more affordable. Only downside is if you're looking for much of a social campus life, SJSU is not for you. It's referred to as a commuter school and on the weekends campus pretty much shuts down.
If you take 280 you're looking at about a 50 minute drive to SF in really good traffic.
If you're only interested in an AA why wouldn't you consider a community college? De Anza is a great school and very affordable.

For the AA do De Anza, Foothill, or CSM. Then transfer into SJSU, SFSU, Hayward State or if you can get the vets benes to help you, Cal or Stanford. The best place for student life of all these would be Cal, SFSU a distant second tied with Stanford, and the others essentially commuter campuses which are fairly dead.

Also, if you can scare up the bucks, USF, a small school but in a good location.

St. Mary's, UOP, SCU (if you don't do Stanford or Cal)
