Default Taking a masters in tax at SJSU, good idea?

What's the quality of education for graduate programs at SJSU? Since losing my job, I was thinking about going back to school and getting a MST which will take a year so hopefully the economy will look brighter than now. I'm mid 20s so not too much work experience but a keen learner so I don't mind studying textbooks again.

Compared to other schools in the area, SJSU is affordable and near where I live, which is why I'm considering it but I welcome your input.

The Big 4 firms in the area all hire out of SJSU, so it's a good move if you're interested in remaining in the area. Hiring is much slower than it was, but it might pick up again by the time you finish.

Try to intern if you can--that helps a lot.

Reasons I no longer use my MS Tax:

- For 1/3 to 1/2 of the year I worked 7 days a week.
- I got tired of being looked at funny for leaving the office before 10PM.
- No one cared I had a MS Tax. Not like you need one to do the data entry nonsense that is tax accounting.

Good thing I got the CPA, or that whole experiment would have been totally worthless.

I used to work at Big 4 and when I was doing payroll testing, I saw how much the tax guys made and holy moly, I'm envious... seems like no one really knows what they do but they get paid big bucks.

It is a long road to get to that point, though. Totally agree with it being mainly data entry work.

If you do make it to manager and up, you do get paid a lot more for being a specialist, but only about 15-20% do that. Most get sick of it. I think for most people it's better just to stick around to get your CPA then do something else.

Have you considered the Master of Taxation at Golden Gate University? Apparently, it is a reputable program in the bay area. I am still trying to learn more about it.

The big4 also hire from there.

Currently working in a big 4 tax office, we have people from SJSU and Golden Gate.

There will always be plenty of recruitment from SJSU, since it costs very little for the local firms to recruit from there.

IRS is a good option too, especially now that big 4 is cutting pay/benefits for new hires.

what's the rep at SJSU? All I know of are: Stanford, Santa Clara, Berkley, Santa Cruz, Cal Poly, University of Southern California. How does SJSU rank among those schools?
