commute from Dublin to San Jose
My husband and I are moving down from Washington, and looking to live in Dublin as I'll be working in Oakland and he'll be in San Jose. How bad will his commute be going 680 south from Dublin to San Jose in the morning? Thanks for the help.

It's not terrible. Then again, the only time I've hit that commute traffic is when I've been going from SJ to Sac (the afternoon), so I'd be much less stressed about a fraction of such a trip.

It can get ugly. The Sunol Grade is a real grind during peak commute hours in the best circumstances, and even a minor accident will turn it into a parking lot. I-680 is the next true north-south freeway west of I-5, it goes through lots of towns, and it is the link from the Central Valley to the Silicon Valley, so it carries a staggering amount of traffic. At least the stretch of 580 going to Oakland isn't so bad.

Not on topic (commuting), but I thought this was an interesting article about the problems with retail in Dublin:
Empty big-box stores drag down their neighbors
This wouldn't help the OP in the near term anyway, but is the BART link to San Jose officially dead?

Despite the massive financial crisis engulfing transit agencies across California, the BART extension to the South Bay is suddenly on its most solid footing ever.

You can hop the ACE train in Pleasanton IRRC. Of course that may not be convenient for many parts of SJ work wise.

There are free shuttles from the Great America ACE station to almost anywhere you'll find major employers in the Silicon Valley.. Milpitas, Santa Clara, Mountain View, etc. That's actually a great option.
