Moving to Bay Area with 3 kids on $230K
What are the some good areas to buy a home in top school districts? Can we make it on $230K?
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Are you trying to say you and your mate make a combined $230k per year and are wondering if you're going to be able to make it on that enormous salary (of course) or is that how much you're looking to purchase a home for? (uh oh)

Yes, you can make it. Regardless of the mayor of San Jose's comment about a $250,000 couple being "upper working class" and unable to afford a home.

Rent first. Home values are still extraordinarily high in great school districts. A well appointed, fairly new four-bedroom house with top Almaden or Saratoga schools will be $2 million and up, well out of your price range, and this sector is only now starting to show signs of weakness. Short sales are becoming increasingly common and inventory is sky-high. For 200 properties to be on the market at the same time in Saratoga is positively staggering. You could afford Silver Creek Valley but you'll want to pay for private schools past the elementary level.

No, I'm saying I will be making $230K; my wife won't work for a couple of years. We have 3 babies under 16 months. We hear so much about outrageous home prices in top school districts, which is why I'm wondering. Also, with no family in the area, we'll need a live-in. My job will involve a fair bit of travel, and she couldn't manage 3 babies alone.

$230,000 is not as much as people think.
I think you can live comfortably but you wont be swimming in luxury.

Best schools would be Cupertino, Almaden Valley (95120), Saratoga, Palo Alto, Los Altos, Mission San Jose in Fremont.

Cupertino, Almaden, Los Altos, Los Gatos, Saratoga are the areas that have outstanding schools.
You should probably rent first, just to get a feel for the areas.
