Hi...I am currently living in Eau Claire, WI where I am going to graduate in May with an English and Spanish teaching degree. The San Jose area sounds like a place I want to go but I know there will be some hoops to jump through to get a job since I am from WI and not CA.

1. Teaching advice: Any advice on teaching jobs in the area (high school)? Schools to look at, how to get credentials, if it will be hard for me to find a job, how the budget/job security/benefits are...etc.

2. Living advice: Living in WI is obviously a cheaper place to live. Will I be able to find a decent apartment and do ok with my starter-teacher salary there? Any advice on where to look for places to live on a lower income?

I would appreciate any info anyone can give. Thanks!!

Hi,
I just graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in December. My degree was in dance and sociology. I stayed in Milwaukee and have been working since I graduated, but I am ready to move! I really want to go back to the Bay area, San jose or silicon valley area probably. I spent two summers living in Palo Alto and I love the Bay Area! I guess I can't really offer a lot of help or advice as I am in the same situation as you are and looking at different options for living and working there. I feel like it is going to be very tough to get hired while still living in WI, so I am considering just moving and trying to get a job after I get there. that idea is a little scary though. I don't know a great deal about the teaching field but if you are having trouble getting hired from across the country you could look at teach for america, i think that they place teachers in high need areas. Write back if you get any good advice about making the move. I will as well as I continue my search! Best of luck!
Laura

Hi, I'm a teacher also moving to the San Jose area. There are several districts hiring in San Jose, and I would suggest searching on EdJoin.org if you haven't already. Your starting salary WILL be enough to pay rent, etc. but a lot of your money will go to rent in San Jose area. I would guess you'll start out at 40-45 G's and rent can easily start at 1,ooo/mo if you wanna live alone. More questions? Was that at all helpful?

Information about obtaining California certification can be obtained by going to the following website

California is always looking for teachers. There are several school districts in the San Jose area.

Apartments are expensive in San Jose. You might consider getting a roomate and sharing an apartment. Because apartments are so expensive, some cities have programs to help new teachers defray the cost of housing.
Good luck. Living in the SF Bay Area is wonderful, but it is very costly.
