I don't know anything about the area and have been reading mixed reviews. What is the safest area in San Jose? How does the whole city thing work--I've been hearing a lot about Sunnyvale, Milipitas etc...are those cities within San Jose?

Also, can anyone recommend an apartment complex? I've heard a lot about Northpark however now I am very skeptical after reading several reviews online.

Could anyone recommend a safe city to live in and a good apartment complex within the city. I can pay up to $1700 for rent--I just want to make sure the place is safe.
hi wolverine, congratulations on your new job.

i just moved to silicon valley from the east coast last june and it's been great.

san jose, milpitas, sunnyvale, mountain view, cupertino and santa clara (santa clara is the heart of silicon valley.. it's also where i live) are all very close to each other and will be in the 20-30 minute commute range (stupid traffic) depending on how far out you go and which cisco building you'll be working in. it seems like they're everywhere heheeh.

in terms of safety, i think safety is fairly relative. i come from baltimore so this place is nothing hahahaah... but really, in my immediate area i go running at night and see a lot of people walking around. i think san jose was rated 3rd safest city when i was researching...?

for the most part, crimes are theft related unless you're in certain parts of downtown san jose. your best bet might be researching some apartments in an area and checking out the local police reports. also, if you have a chance, visit the area during day and night to get a feel. again, though, i think you'll be ok.

side note - even though you can go up to $1700, you might want to look into one bedrooms or studios to save some money since the immediate area of silicon valley is fairly expensive compared to other areas. then again, i'm saving for a house and i dunno maybe cisco is paying you scrooge mcduck money bank amount.

cool.

sj is definitely not the 3rd safest city in the US. it's one of the safest (or safer) big cities.

4th best big city according to this article: San Jose falls to fourth safest big city | Oakland Tribune | Find Articles at BNET

Gotadbl--Is Milipitas a safe area? how does it compare to san jose?

thank you all!
Milpitas is pretty safe, but not as safe as mountain view or cupertino due to the higher housing costs. If you're a new college grad, I think those areas would have more people your age. Btw you can look into the new hire network and young professionals network when you join Cisco to meet more professionals.
