What a boring city with cookie cutter malls and suburban lifestyle. They have Santana Row like setting in Maryland, Ohio, Southern CA, Missouri and so many others. A city without a functioning or lively downtown is not a worthy city.

Still at a loss trying to decipher what a "hole in the donut city" is.

Meanwhile, there is a lonely, dry fire hydrant somewhere in SF crying out for you, Dog. Do your duty.
A city without a downtown/ center.

Meant downtown being alive and functioning. This downtown is dead for years since the 1950's and has never successfully been resurrected.

Although I see where you're coming from here, "not even close" does not apply and it can even be argued that SJ has better food. It depends on what type you like. In general I find the Asian food much better in SJ/Santa Clara/Milpitas.

Bear in mind folks that all of these criticisms are opinions and nothing more. I like both San Jose and San Francisco but for different reasons. However, I would much rather live in San Jose and visit San Francisco whenever I wanted the city ambiance. Which city is best is a mute point because it is all in the eye of the beholder.

What is the definitin of a functioning downtown?

Noun1.functioning - process or manner of functioning or operating; "the power of its engine determines its operation"; "the plane's operation in high winds"; "they compared the cooking performance of each oven"; "the jet's performance conformed to high standards" performance, operation
physical process, process - a sustained phenomenon or one marked by gradual changes through a series of states; "events now in process"; "the process of calcification begins later for boys than for girls"
Adj.1.functioning - performing or able to perform its regular function; "a functioning flashlight" malfunctioning, nonfunctional - not performing or able to perform its regular function; "a malfunctioning valve"

If you're going to make generic statements, you should give examples as to why.

San Jose may be somewhat boring, but I hardly think that automatically makes SF so much better. SF has crappy weather, far more crime, a serious and growing homeless problem, and even worse budget issues than SJ to name a few things.

Personally, I find SJ to be much more liveable than SF, but I'm not going to go so far as to say that SJ is better than SF.
To be fair, winter weather tends to be better at the immediate coast than it is inland. By better I mean, no frost, no tule fog, warmer (especially warmer lows). Granted the rainfall from individual rain events will be greater at the coast.

The truly parochial ones, in the mold of T.J Rogers, think tech stuff starts at Lawrence Expwy and Dixon Landing Road. They portray everything north of that as an endless old folks home or tourist trap, with pockets of ghetto thrown in. There is a tale or perhaps urban legend that TJ refused to have a company party in Southern Alameda County because (mind you this was the late 80s, pre area code proliferation) "I don't do the 415 thing!"
