Where on skyline is the house? I am originally from the Santa Cruz Mountains and have commuted to Santa Clara many times. The route I take is down HWY 9 and north on Saratoga Ave to Santa Clara. So if you not to far from 9 consider that, there's also a rd that branches off of 9 called Stevens Canyon that drops you off in Cupertino near 280. The main thing to watch for at night is DEER!!! They are everywhere, you can buy a pair of deer whistles that go on your car and I can tell you from expereice the work pretty good. Also if your gonna run in the mountains consider a can of mase because of mountain lions. It's really not likley you'll get attacked the stats prove it's almost as rare as getting struck by lightning but you never know.

I lived in Las Cumbres (which is off of Skyline Blvd./ Hwy 35) for 10 years, and living in the mountains does come with its downsides. I remember having to deal with black ice in the winter (which can be very hazardous, especially near the bends with a shear drop on one side of the street), when it rained in the winter, that would slow down our commute to the bottom of the hill, and then like other people have mentioned, hwy 17 can be very dangerous when people don't know how to adjust their speed according to the weather.
I miss living there so much, and I would gladly take the risks involved to live there again.

You are insane. The 17 sucks. Too much congestion, not enough lanes, too many people that have no business driving on it, driving.

I know a guy in Boulder Creek who commutes to Intel in Santa Clara on a daily basis. He has been doing it for over a decade. There's a woman in the Blossom Valley area of San Jose who commutes to her job in Santa Cruz, and has done so for 20-years. I used to commute from Santa Cruz to Fremont.
It's all relative. BTW, Skyline Blvd is *very* popular with motorcyclists and bicyclists except during inclement weather.

I was outside in the yard in Prunedale during the 1989 LP EarthQuake.
It did a lot of damage to Hollister, Watsonville, etc...

The big issue I always had, and heard from friends who commuted to Santa Clara from the mountains, Scotts, or SC, was when it was bad.... it was bad. Although there technically are some alternatives, there really isn't a reasonable alternative for rush hour other than 17 and when there is a big accident, slide, or other event that closes the HWY, sometimes you can be stuck there for hours or may as well just go back home for the day.
That being said, I had many friends and colleagues that commuted from the mountains and far side into San Jose and Santa Clara daily. It was a bit of a haul, but they loved where they lived so much that the tradeoff was worth it to them.

Yeah, you're right about that. 152 to 101 is technically an alternative, but it gets overloaded very easily if 17 is inaccessible. If you can at least access 35, then you can take the back way in through Saratoga.

It's doable. I lived in Santa Cruz and worked in Cupertino for quite a while, and did evenings at SJSU.
