Sounds better than the Capitola Inn if he wants to be in Santa Cruz proper and you relayed the info in just 3 sentences.

Thanks again.
Hi. I can't thank you enough for the information. You seem to intuit what it is that I am really looking for before I am aware of it myself. I think I will stay in Capitola and get a bigger scope of whats going on in the Santa Cruz area.
Once again, I can't thank you enought!
Ps. Hope your housing situation has stablized into something that comfortable for you.

I'm not sure what their rates are now.
New management took it over during the summer and i haven't needed them ... yet.
It's in Capitola ... a good walk to down town Capitola (fun to walk around especially off season) but more importantly, it's just a short walk to the main bus route which will take you to downtown Santa Cruz in a fairly short time and up to Cabrillo College if you're interested in looking at that area.
Check out this map to get an idea of how Soquel Drive easily connects the Santa Cruz proper, Capitola, Soquel and Aptos and on into Watsonville.
You'll see, when you're here, how if you live anywhere within walking or biking distance from the bus route on Soquel Drive, you'll be in good shape.
Oh, but you probably have a car.
Anyway .. still good to know.
Click on Map of Soquel Drive, Santa Cruz, CA.
The link is messed up.

If you really wanna stay in downtown Santa Cruz, i can't help you with a hotel/motel recommendation and i'd prefer (like i'm your mother ) for you to stay in Capitola so you can get a wider view of the area and not feel that you need to be relegated to Santa Cruz proper ... especially if you're going to attend Cabrillo.
I love S.C. but it can be a bit frenetic.
Staying at the Capitola Inn will probably provide you with a better sleep than many places downtown.
And, no, you do not want to stay at a Motel 6 in Watsonville.
If you do stay at the Capitola Inn, ask for a room in the building where the office is and ask for a room on the 2nd floor.
Better rooms and more quiet.
And see if you can bargain with them.
I know that all the motels and hotels are struggling and i imagine they are very empty and could use some $$$.
The Capitola Inn
Sorry i can't help you with a downtown recommendation.
But this is a good place to stay.
And sorry for the "long winded" post.

You're very welcome and thanks for your p.s. note regarding my housing.
It's o.k. ... after many years i still haven't found a place where i (and my dog which makes it even more challenging) can truly settle down into but it'll happen when it happens.
I hope the weather is as beautiful when you come for a visit as it has been in the last few days but rain will be coming soon ... who knows when.
And yeah, if you're going to attend Cabrillo, living in parts of Aptos or Soquel may suit you best.
Downtown S.C. is always there and easy to get to when you want to.
Good luck!

Is Santa Cruz like LA?
Hi. Interesting thing, I was talking to someone who works in the healing arts, last night, and explaining my desperation to get out of LA. When I mentioned that I was seriously considering Santa Cruz, as my new home, he said,"It just like Los Angeles." Is there any truth to this statement?

My god no.
What a strange thing to say.
And if you're interested in the healing arts, the Santa Cruz area is a good place to be.
I wonder what in the world that person was talking about.
Nothing could be farther from the truth ... well, i'm sure there are things farther from the truth but still .... that's a strange and interesting perception.
Why don't you come and visit and find out for yourself how it's definitely not L.A. on so many levels.

I get it. The statement, "Santa Cruz is just like LA" is absurd. Thanks for breaking it down for me.

Cabrillo is a very good school.
There is a youth hostel near downtown Santa Cruz. And there are lots of little motels and inns and such. The University bought the Holiday Inn. It is now called University Inn and I believe rents rooms to the public.
Santa Cruz would be a fun place to stay. The buses go out to Cabrillo and to the University. Students at both colleges get discounts on bus tickets, and there is a free shuttle at the University once you are up there.
Healing Arts as in acupuncture and herbs and such? There are a couple of good schools for that as well. Five Branches and Twin Lakes?

Youth Hostel--huh?
Hi. Thanks for the Youth Hostel idea. I just checked it out on line and I was impressed. However, the photo's may not reveal the real deal. Nevertheless, I am excited. The thought of coming to Santa Cruz in order to check out apartments feels enchanting. I am so excited!
