Default Yet another relocation thread

I may have a job opportunity shortly that would relocate me to the South Bay area. I have lived in Southern California before so have a bit of a sense of the housing sticker shock that comes with a major-city CA address, but I currently live on the East Coast, midsize city. I have visited the SF area quite a bit and enjoyed it, never spent much time in the South Bay but do think it sounds appealing. Job itself is in Santa Clara.

I have one young son, and as far as I am concerned, the trick is in the balance of schools and housing/community - I own my home now but would intend to rent at least for the foreseeable future upon moving. I have done some research so I know Palo Alto/Los Altos/Cupertino/Los Gatos are the desirable school districts. Based on my looks on craigslist, I could conceivably rent in one of those districts. But I am trying to look at different options, too, and am aware of CA's budget woes. So on that point, anyone have specific recommendations for good private schools? Say I wanted to look at housing in Mountain View (non-Cupertino district) or Campbell or Willow Glen (which both sound very appealing but for the hit or miss school issues), or Santa Clara itself - any resources for good private schools in those areas? My son is in private school now and I've done the review-all-the-schools-in-the-city thing where I live, so I know that there can be great private schools and not-so-great ones and I don't know how to evaluate coming in from outside the community.

Ideally, I'd have not more than a half hour or so commute, and be close to public transportation.

Finally, I am a single mom, so while schools and kid-friendliness are top priority, opportunity for a social life for myself would also be welcome, if I ever get the time, so anything in any of these areas that tips the balance (in either a positive or negative way) on that point?

Any thoughts or recommendations? Just trying to get my ducks in a row in case this job offer pans out . . . and if it doesn't, I guess I will console myself with my current low cost of living, ha.

Edited because for some reason the post didn't recognize my paragraph breaks - sorry to anyone who saw it in one giant run-on.

Stratford and Challenger are both top private schools in the bay area.
