Questions regarding entering UC Riverside.
Hi, I currently live in san jose.
I got accepted in UC Riverside for this winter quarter.
I am now having some difficulties to fill out the statement of legal residence.
It asks "Did/Will my parents file a California income tax return this calender and the last calender year?"
My parents have been working under the table so they did not file any tax documents.
If I put "no, they did not and will not", is the school gonna declare that I am a nonresident student?
and what happens if they deny my residency?
it says on the form that it is for tuition purposes? does that mean I have to pay more money?
sighs the UC's tuition is already hecka expensive >.<
please, any help, advice or insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you =]

I don't know how it will play out for you, but yes, non-residents pay a lot of money. Good luck.

you mean your parents file no income tax returns? Even if working under the table I would think they would file something or they should. Looks like you will have to answer and say, No, thus pay out of state tuition.

...So basically, your parents are taking advantage of the benefits of this country, but are getting them for free. I'm pretty sure this state is in a huge fiscal mess and when I hear about people not paying taxes but still getting to drive on the tax-payer paid-for roads and sending their kids to tax-payer paid-for public shools, etc. it just really bugs me. Sorry, I'm sure that's not the response you were looking for, but I had to say it. Almost a third of my paycheck is taken out for taxes and I feel like I'm subsidizing people who feel that they're above the law. I hope somebody from the IRS is reading this post.

im sorry. i think i have misled everyone.
when i said they were working under the table, i meant that they dont have a "real" job, they work a couple hours here, a couple hours there.
they have very little income and sometimes even have no income.
so we are not required to file taxes.
we are not avoiding paying taxes and we are not doing anything illegal.
what i worry about is the school will deny my residency because we didnt file taxes.
and my parents cant afford to pay out-of-state tuition.
i may have to take out a loan if it really happens.

Well,
If this is true and you can justify it as 'nothing illegal' then you will need to explain this to the school admissions dept. They will probably need other proof of CA residency. You guys pay rent where you are, have bills to your address, etc... right? Gather as much proof/evidence as you can and take it in. Not everything is as cut and dry as these forms. You have to learn to work with the cards you were dealt which it sounds like you are doing in continuing your ed. Ask for a waiver based on special circumstances.
But whatever happens don't give up on your dreams! Work hard and train and it will pay off.

When I lived in Riverside, prettymuch anything that required residency was satisfied by a utility bill. Phone, gas, electric, these establish that you live in a place. If your parents don't make enough to have to file they don't have to file.
Sounds like you are officially low income so check on help based on that.
UCR is cool. I never attended but have been there to put ads in the campus paper. The campus has great buildings and a couple of science fiction movies have been filmed there. And we used to go to the folk concerts at the Barn. I don't think the folk concerts are still held but the Barn is still there with live music concerts.

and I will mention again, they are still supposed to file income tax returns. Actually now they are paying the price for not filing. I am 99% sure you will have to pay out of state tuition...
If they have no income, they must be receiving government assistance and getting a tax credit for you and any children still at home. Also if indeed they have very little income you should be elegible for student aid..I would think your school counsilor would be helping you with this.
I don't want to seem like I am questioning you, but something here does not add up....

The best thing to do is ask the FinAid or Billing office. What was required of me, if I remember for UCSB was utilities and proof showing I lived at my current location for 'x' number of years. However, this was at the start of the budget crisis (2004). I don't think things have changed in such a short amount of time, but you should simply ask how to prove residency...don't get into details, keep the question simple.

Out of state enrollment,... IMPOSSIBLE
OP you state you live in San Jose, so don't worry.
UCR will know the name of the high school you attended. Your acceptance is based on the merits. U.C. applicants are asked for parents tax infos to determine the eligibility for student loans & grants.
What I don't agree with you is why UCR instead of SJSU or SJCC or De Anza... you truly aren't concerned about your parents financial conditions... you should have a part time job to help lessen the financial burdens on your parents,...
Years ago I was accepted to Stanford but my mom couldn't afford it,... I worked part time since the freshman year in high school & 4 years at Stanford..., my mom is a single mom that still do houseworks,... she send both of us girls to Stanford!
And I HAVE NO SYMPATHY for you,..!
