** Note - I'm posting this in the SF Forum because the SJ Forum is needless and redundant. There is one Bay Area, not two. **

In the never ending quest for ecologically correct living, the boomerkinds who run Sunnyvale decided they wanted to get on the Agenda 21 train. Their solution? Replace the Sunnyvale Town Center Mall with the typical "Ecotopian" dense pack of mixed use residential / retail.

So, the wrecking ball came and did its deed. Now, unlike the Bay Meadows debacle*, they actually managed to fully prep the site and start building something. Only problem was, lack of capitalization, and then the double whammy of the recession. So now, there is this massive set of partially completed structures - only the new Target was actually completed.

The project went into receivership in October and now, the new owner is basically mothballing the buildings with no definite plans other than keeping them from starting to rust out and fall down.

Anyone want to make any bets on the eventual outcome of this one?

This is extremely informative, especially the downloadable podcast:

RadioSunnyvale.com | Peter Pau on Downtown Sunnyvale (http://www.radiosunnyvale.com/shows/special-report/special-report-2009111901 - broken link)

Learned something new. Pau / the consortium are also doing the Town and Country debacle as well. That one is truly sad. Empty abandoned buildings (all the tenants - small businesses mostly - were evicted) getting more and more dangerous by the day. And no funding to either tear them down (the original plan) or restore them.

This is a real mess.

Foreclosure is supposed to happen this month.

No light at the end of this tunnel at present.

Foreclosure should be happening currently.

Seems there is a news blackout, though.

Very difficult to get accurate info about this.

No progress here, other than a small sliver of the already built office space being leased to Nokia.

No new activity on partially construction and unconstructed portions.

The old Town and Country Village portion is still essentially a quasi abandoned property.

It's just very unfortunate that Sunnyvale chose to demolish most of its downtown in the early 1970s to build a mall (Sunnyvale Town Center) that later went bust, and has little to show for it now, save for a one-block section of Murphy Avenue. Meanwhile, Town and Country Village struggles for patrons.

Still no real progress. Still only Nokia, Target and the old Macy's. They finally demolished the shuttered Town and Country property. What a sad loss that was. Urban prairie in the middle of Sunnyvale. What a strange time we live in.

Build a stadium for a football or baseball team there. Anybody ready for the Sunnyvale Raiders?

You're kidding, right? Sports stadiums are the biggest boondoggles of public funds with some of the least returns for the investment.

This will never get completed:

Sunnyvale Town Center sale hits snag | Silicon Valley / San Jose Business Journal

This reminds me of situations you here about in places like Detroit and Buffalo. People fighting over bankrupt commercial properties and ruins.
