Default Santa Clara public transportation

How's the public transportation system in/out of Santa Clara?

I'm interested in knowing if this is a good way to get in/out of Santa Clara (by using ACE Commuter Service, AMTRAK and/or CAL TRAIN).

And what's the VTA (light rail)?

Thank you.

ACE is a peak-hour service between Stockton and San Jose, which takes Central Valley commuters into the Silicon Valley. You can transfer at the Great America station to a number of different employer shuttles in the area.

There's also an Amtrak line that goes from the same station towards Oakland, Richmond, Vallejo and eventually to Sacramento.

VTA is Santa Clara County's bus and light-rail service. If you want to rely on it, try to be close to either El Camino Real or Stevens Creek Blvd for maximum convenience.

Thank you. We are considering living outside of Silicon Valley and trying to figure out if it is worth (time & money). What's the commute like from Walnut Creek to Santa Clara via public transport. Is it doable?

And how about from Morgan Hill to/from Santa Clara?

Any sugestions would be appreciated.

Walnut Creek to Santa Clara could be done two ways. First one is BART and then a transfer to Amtrak at the Oakland Coliseum. That could get expensive, not to mention time-consuming. On the plus side, Amtrak sells $10 BART tickets for $8, which is the best discount I'm aware of anywhere. The other way would be taking BART to Fremont and then getting on the VTA 120 or 140 express, depending on where you need to go.

Morgan Hill to Santa Clara would be done by Caltrain. If you're going to the tech quarter you can take the VTA 60 bus from the Santa Clara Caltrain station towards the Great America area, and that's free with a Caltrain monthly pass. Alternately, there is the 121 express bus which goes straight from Gilroy and Morgan Hill to the Mission College/Great America area.

How long would each of these commutes take? How's the traffic with the 121 express bus from Morgan Hill?

Thank you again.

The 121 gets the carpool lane, and it uses Monterey Road instead of 101 to get to Morgan Hill from Gilroy, so I understand it is pretty dependable.

My guess would be an hour and a half to two hours from Walnut Creek, an hour or less from Morgan Hill.

There's also an express bus from the Park & Ride Lot in Morgan Hill to downtown SJ.

The traffic isn't too bad from Morgan Hill (so a friend of mine from Morgan Hill tells me) because the bus takes the carpool lane. But gett to Santa Clara from there would probably be significantly more time consuming.

There are many public transit options in the South Bay Area. Which one works best for you depends entirely on where you are and where you want to get to. Please go to 511.org and do some research on routes, then come back here and ask anything else you need to.
