Hey, thanks for all of your advice. As for the cell phone coverage (Gearhound), half the time I don't even know where?? my phone is. That's pretty bad, isn't it.

You might also want to check out the following areas assuming you will bring your horses and love of the country life with you should you decide to move here.
Glorieta/Pecos/Rowe area east of Santa Fe - Home to ponderosas and other taller trees than you'll find in drier places like those off Hwy 14 south of town. More rain and snow (but coming from northern WA that won't be strange to you), but much greener. You can find very good deals on horse properties in this area - and you're still within 30 minutes of Santa Fe. Lots of Harleys and NRAers and hunters in that neck of the woods.
Poaque/Nambe - Largely farming areas north of town, within 30 minutes or so of the plaza. There are also some pretty good buys in this area as well.
If you want to spend more, then you can live closer in - but you don't need to break the bank to live well and comfortably with your horses and dogs in this area.
Enjoy your visit!

I agree with this post, it's definitely greener in the areas mentioned.

One thing a previous poster mentioned was biking and New Mexico. It's a pretty drive to Taos then over to Raton to visit the NRA Whittington Center. I suppose that's pretty cool. Never been there but plan on going.

Also, there's the Zia Rifle and Pistol club in Albuquerque. You can shoot 24 hours a day if you want.

It's still pretty expensive here compared to other places.
Zias and others, We're looking at Santa Fe as well as areas outside such as Pecos. DH and I are both Texas born and bred but have spent over 20 years in the West. We're looking to make a retirement move from east NM. Have looked at Albuquerque fairly thoroughly but getting kind of leary about the crime situation there. We both have alot of interests and are Liberals. Just wondering what it is truly like to live in The City Different. Appreciate any observations you and any other Santa Feans may have....

"...and don't go spouting conservative viewpoints if you sense hostility." -- Lovehound

The same should be said for people "spouting" PC/liberal viewpoints...

Northanna - You might want to start another thread with your questions and/or concerns - but first I'd advise you to look at past posts and threads which cover a lot of the same ground as what you are looking to get information on. If you can't find what you are looking for, then by all means start a thread with your specific question/s. One thing you'll find is that we Santa Feans aren't shy about sharing our views....

...Well...if you have plenty of money, you'll enjoy yourself. I wouldn't buy any place in central NM that depends on well water myself. As (relatively) crowded as it is getting, I'd hate for my well to run dry.

Other than the water situation and all crowds, I like living in Santa Fe.

Couldn't you just refill it with the hose?
