Sheeh, what a load of lies. Most native NMs know that Espanola has the best restaurants in the state, friendly residents, few tourists clogging up the streets, no nightly shooting like Albuquerque does, no protests by extreme libs like Santa Fe does. The hotel rates are much lower than in SF or Taos. It's the center of the Eight Northern Indian Pueblos.

If you listen to only negative things about Espanola then you better listen to all the negative things that can be said about any other city. All cities have crazies living there. No, not EVERYONE in Espanola owns a gun. I can't see how anyone can believe that one! That's like saying everyone in Albuquerque holds up banks just because there are a few, very few wacky people there holding up banks there.

I guess it's all about attitude. If you want to find negative things in people or places you'll find 'em! Look for the good, it's there too. I'm sorry that you won't take the time to discover for yourself that Espanola is not a bad place, no worse than any other city/town in the state or country for that matter.

Default Espanola

I am always skeptical when someone throws out a flame post having only posted one time. Aside from that, you are definitely entitled to your opinion but I strongly disagree. All city and town Chamber of Commerce websites will only show the good side of their area. It is their job. My family has lived in that region for many generations. I know the area well and I know what people tell me who live in that area. You draw your own conclusions.

Thanks for your opinion. I live IN Espanola, not just the area. I have done so for 55 years. I've visited other cities and towns all over the nation and would never make harsh judgments about the entire city based on rumors or limited time in the area. The difference between you and me is one of outlook. I have a very positive outlook in life and have ability to see positive attributes in places and people. I don't have the time nor desire to carry resentment or grudges toward others. I respect you views but respectfully disagree with your negative attitude and views. Please, have a wonderful day!

By the way, my post was far from a flame, just a correction. My first post, yes, I just found this forum. You have to start somewhere don't you?

phf919 ~ I just found this thread from several months ago ... and wondering if you could give us an update.

Did you decide to try out Santa Fe while hubby is deployed? Are you living there yet?

I am going to move to Santa Fe (Eldorado) next year and am very interested in hearing your impressions of the city.

Default Paradise??

If you are intensely looking for Paradise - forget it!
NM isn't paradise, but neither is any other place that I have ever been to.
Lay out, preferably on paper, your goals, what do you have to have from your new environment, what would you like to have and what don't you want under any circumstances.
Then when you have these all down on hard copy, take off the rose colored glasses and evaluate the places you consider living against your written word, you may be surprised by what a dose of realism leads you.
I live in the Santa Fe area because I choose to - like a close friend or relative, I see many faults here (just as I see faults in myself), but to keep my friends or relatives close, I determine that I can live with life's imprefections here. I have seen many people come to SF over the past 25 years (more than 25 or even 20 years ago SF truely was the 'city different') and many people leave, looking for the paradise they didn't find here because paradise and reality never crossed lines on their expectations graph.
Don't come to SF because it's "hot" on CNN or Money Magazine or Conde Nash or some other genius telling you where you should go and what you should do when you get there.
Come if it's the place for you - imprefections and all.

I am planning to come there to live because I have loved the state for 35 years now, and visit as often as I can. My husband and I knew years ago that we wanted to retire and build our dream house there.

Sure, there are imperfections ~ I have not lived anyplace that was perfect ~ but for me the positives way outweigh the negatives.

I do see people posting here on this website though, who think they want to move to the state, but have never visited here. They REALLY need to take the good advice to come here and check it out thoroughly before they jump into something that might disappoint them.

New Mexico is a very different place from any other state in the union. That makes it the right choice for some, but not for everyone.

Towanda and Greatdanes. I couldn't agree more. There isn't any total paradise anywhere, except if you believe in Heaven. One earth, there will always be good and bad. You just have to find a place that YOU think has more good than bad for your lifestyle. I always heard what a paradise Hawaii was. I sure got a reality check when I saw Honolulu. Sure Waikiki beach and all is great and the ocean is beautiful, but there is major crime, drugs are rampant, there are slummy areas just like any other city. So I found out that the only paradise on earth is what you make it out to be.

Hello.... I just found this site yesterday during one of my searchers about living in Santa Fe. I find some great conversation and information about Santa Fe but most of the posts are a couple years old. I was in New Mexico for nine days in May (three in Santa Fe and seven in Taos). I have been looking for the right place to settle into retirement and Santa Fe really grabbed my attention. I have thought of renting a furnished place for a couple months to see if my first impression was correct before packing up all and just moving. The trip there and the couple months rent would be an expense I would rather put toward a home. I live rural now in Southern Oregon for almost three years now and do not feel that I want to perminantly retire here. I would be wanting to purchase at around 300k to 350k. I like the privacy of more rural but also wanting to be close to shopping and such. Not sure how I get the responses after I hit post since this is my first time. Kind of like the bottle with a note in it being washed up to shore lol.
