I've worked along highway right-of-ways several times and the edge of the blacktop was always the best place to find snakes. They like them because there tends to be denser vegetation there for hunting and hiding and because the blacktop soaks up solar energy to help warm them up.
Thanks! Well, I certainly learned the hard way! Never again.
Best advice I've gotten/given is pay attention and don't step or put your hands where you can't see. I live a little south of town in an open hilly area. Mostly I only see bull snakes and red racers and almost never around my house. Keep doors and screens functioning well and keep a well mowed perimeter around the house and your encounters should be minimal. Although I had a sizable Tarantula in the house the other day. She was right near the portal door where I have outside lights on a timer. The lights attract a lot of bugs which attract large predator insects. Also stepped over a small rattler on a construction site near Glorieta about a week ago. There were numerous scraps of plywood lying around because it's been a little muddy. If you make comfortable habitat, nature just tends to move in.
Have lived in Eldorado for 3 years now, and found one big western diamondback in my driveway. I sent it to snake heaven with my shovel. I have a rule about snakes, they need to stay off my property or their slithering days are done.
If I want to see some snakes - where would be a good place to go looking for these fascinating animals?
Reptile House - Albuquerque Rio Grande Zoo
The building was formerly used to hold many of the zoo's reptiles and amphibians. The reptile house was remodeled in 2012 to include taipans, death adders, Chinese alligator, and alligator snapping turtle. With the renovations the building houses mostly reptiles. The exhibit houses many species of cobras, rattle snakes, and lizards. There are two large areas where the zoo's Komodo dragons are held.
