Default commuting?

Where do the working people in Santa Fe live? It seems very expensive. Does everyone commute? (My family is from Florida and is considering a job in Santa Fe.)

Lot of people drive in from Albuquerque. There is also a park-n-ride that runs from various locations around Albuquerque that goes to Santa Fe and to the labs in Los Alamos.

Its about 50 miles or so. I make the commute quite often with my work and it takes me about 45 min to an hour depending on what time of day I leave.
I like Rio Rancho enough but I do not recomend moving there if you have to commute across the river to work. That is a night mare and with most of the road funds tied up into the railrunner it may be a while before that all changes.

A few places that might work better for you are Bernalillo, Placitas or Algadones.

Like _yb said, the commute across the river can be quite frustrating because the traffic is bad. I25 is so busy too. I would try to get a job in ABQ or Rio Rancho and live there. Leave Santa Fe to the rich people. If you have to work in Santa Fe, yes the Placitas area would be a little closer to Santa Fe. I just would hate to commute that myself. It is expected to gain much more traffic since the Santa Fe to ABQ area will continue to grow by leaps and bounds.

But isn't the RailRunner going to connect Albuquerque and Santa Fe within a couple of years? That would make the commuting really simple.

The railrunner is scheduled to extend up to Santa Fe by sometime in 2008 and will be express service (no stops) which should make the commute to Santa Fe a snap.

In the meantime, automobile or personal helicopter is your only option. The drive really isn't that bad from the HWY 550 area because most people drive between 80 to 85 mph going up to Santa Fe anyway.

Cheers...
