Yes, I miss the water, but try to find some anyway. This weekend I went up to Canjilon Lakes, which proved to be an utter disappointment. Three smallish, nasty, muck-bottomed ponds. My clothes stunk just from touching the water. My dog jumped in and smelled like an old, nasty carp. The campspots there were shoulder to shoulder, and there was the usual ton of locals with their worms trying to catch some pitiful, slimy fish that might dwell in Canjilon. On the way back, turned off into Abiquiu Lake and went swimming. That was a good idea, and swam and swam and had a really great time. It takes some determination, but you can find some water in NM, just keep your expectations low. The longer you live here, the lower your expectations will get too. That goes for lakes, service, education, income...the list goes on and on.

There is a reason we call it the high desert.

I hiked up to Nambe Lake two weeks ago and went tubing on the Rio Chama last night. I don't really need any more lake than that.

I have spent time in ABQ and the lack of water, browness, and dryness got to me. But I agree for Santa Fe in particular, all the things caphillsea77 says can make up for it. As long as you set aside from some cash for vacations to where there is some lushness and water Canoeing and Kayacking on beautiful remote natural lakes surrounded by trees and beautiful rivers is truly one of the worlds great outdoor joys.

I was born and raised in Maine and left there because of the high humidity. Possibly extreme northern Maine has low humidity, but not the rest of the state. I much prefer our 98 degree days with 7% humidity over a day that is 75 and 90% humidity as in Maine.

I was raised close to the beach in CA. I do not really miss oceans or large bodies of water. My husband is quite content fishing in Chama while I lay on a rock and enjoy the beauty. You can't beat the beauty of NM. If you want lakes they have them but kayaking is about all I want, no need for a ski boat.

We don't have room for a lake in Santa Fe, Super Wal Mart took the last available spot.

Hey Debbie
I'm happy to hear there are places to kayak in NM! I thought that may be one thing I'd have to give up!

Lake Heron just had a kayak festival last weekend. So far it's my favorite lake in NM. It's no-wake.

It is about an hour or so north of Santa Fe and about 30 minutes south of Chama where we stay each year. I prefer rivers to lakes but if you want to ski, it might be a little hard on a river There are some nice subdivisions on that lake too but again I prefer either being near Chama or all the way down to Santa Fe.
