Has anyone relocated from the East Coast to Santa Fe and can provide some information about reputable movers etc? I do NOT want PODS or any similar storage container. I'm asking specifically about professional movers and need tips or suggestions how to manage costs. Only have 1 estimate so far and it's over 4K.

It's the reputation of the movers on YOUR end of the move that's most important - as they will be the ones who will do the packing (unless you do it yourself, in which case you likely won't be covered for breakage) and loading on to the moving van.

The driver, and perhaps co-driver will then use a local crew (from an affiliate company if you use one of the national chains) to help unpack the van and move the furnishings into your home here. The driver is generally the one who puts the furniture back together if it needed to be dismantled for the trip.

So, really, who has a good reputation and prices here is not necessarily what you should be looking at. FInd the best mover you can where you are now, and they will handle all aspects of your move. It's always a bit traumatic (and expensive!). Having moved from coast to coast and places in-between, my advice is based on direct experience with no less than a dozen interstate moves. Good luck!

When I moved from Boston to Albuquerque, I had the same problem. I gave any and everything I didn't need to charity and got a tax right off. Then I just shipped all my important stuff to New Mexico. A total of 20-25 HUGE boxes of "books" ground mail. Cost me about $600 at the most. Once I got to NM, I just bought furniture.

For $4000.00 you'll be able to buy new furniture, or get deals on Craigslist.

I have moved with professional movers, have worked for them part time years ago, and part of my family has been in the business for 60+ years.

How far you move your household goods and what the weight of the shipment is the primary factor which determines the majority of the cost. There are other related expenses "packaging". Our last move from PA to NM was in 1997 and it was $20,000...

Sometimes it is less expensive to get rid of the junk, than to pay to move it.

I would suggest to go with a major mover.

There is a forum here at City-Data dedicated to the subject: General Moving Issues

Good luck.
