SANTA FE, N.M. — A national economic research group has named Santa Fe one of the best college destinations in America, a distinction that raised a few quizzical eyebrows among students in the City Different.

“It is sort of strange that Santa Fe would be one of the top college towns because the population itself is not that young,” noted Graeme Thistlewaite, a St. John’s College freshman from Hawa

The student population at the S.F. College of Art and Design, the S.F. Community College, St, Johns and the American Institute of Indian Arts totals close to 8500. That doesn't include the S.F. Higher Education Center which also has enrollees from UNM and NM Highlands University as well. Of course being ranked among the "best" goes beyond just the population, but having between 10 - 20% of the population in Santa Fe colleges doesn't seem too shabby.

Two quotes that caught my eye:

the majority of Santa Fe’s higher education population consists of part-time community college students.

Uhhhh. I think Santa would be a great place to be a college student, but I would never consider it a college town, especially given the above statistic.

“I think it’s cool that it’s trying to be an artsy town,” said Kalysta Fern, a 20-year-old freshman at St. John’s College in Santa Fe.

Keep tryin' Santa Fe! You'll be an artsy town some day!

Seriously, where did they find these people?
