Old Man Gloom burns Friday in Santa Fe
Kai Porter
August 31, 2017 06:45 PM

SANTA FE, N.M. -- Tens of thousands of people will pour into Fort Marcy Park in Santa Fe on Friday to watch the 93rd annual burning of Zozobra.

The big guy himself will be strung up on a 55-foot pole. Crews were busy Thursday setting up equipment and doing sound checks. The field will be packed with people ready to burn away their sorrows.
This year, Old Man Gloom's face features two big turquoise eyes with remote-controlled pupils. He's sporting a brown sweater. The color of his hair? Well, that's going to be a surprise.

That's kinda creepy. I wonder if it was what inspired Burning Man in the Nevada desert.

Fiestas de Santa Fe has been held since 1712 to celebrate the Spanish retaking of the city in 1692 by Don Diego de Vargas from the Pueblo tribes who had occupied the city since the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. The burning of Zozobra dates from 1924. It was also called Old Man Gloom, "Zozobra" means "anxiety" in Spanish. A simplistic explanation is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zozobra

Not related, but a burning in Albuquerque, Rudolfo Anaya's answer to Zozobra has been burning of El Kookooee each October in Albuquerque's South Valley for more than 20 years.

Here is our 7 minute video of the Burning Of El Kookooee in 2012:
