Sorry, we disagree there. About both the sentiments of the first posters comments which I found rude and my measured response, which you apparently found rude. Smug is state of mind not an bad name. I was purposely polite in my comments and wished the person well, I think someone would have to have awful thin skin to think otherwise.

The post to which I was responding suggested that anyone who lives or lived in a place they didn't like didn't do their "homework". I was merely pointing out that for many of us that isn't the case. In fact we live where we have to and to suggest that we are at fault is condescending at best (or that other word).

To make peace I will admit that obviously many people think Santa Fe is a great place. For them it is and more power to them, I simply don't agree and this forum is a place where all opinions of a city may be expressed. I wish to express those opinions in a non-caustic manner without being labled "stupid" as in it's stupid to not do your homework.

Sorry if I offended you towanda that's not my intent. On that note, the Santa Fe rodeo is really cool and I'd go back there for that.

You didn't offend me. I DO have a pretty thick skin.

I have found 633red's posts about her coming move to Santa Fe to be very informative and helpful and I have never seen anything "smug" in her posts.

But then....I do agree with her, that before we make a major move, it is important to do our homework...to make sure we know the area, have been there at least several times to check it out personally, know the pros and cons, and are in a position to take on the financial responsibility.

I guess I am just surprised that anyone would disagree with that....or would call it smug when someone reminds us we need to do our homework. That would be my first advice should someone tell me they are thinking of moving to New Mexico...make sure you check it out THOROUGHLY. NM is not for everyone. That is the kind of advice we see on this forum all the time.

As far as Santa Fe, some people love it, some merely like it, and some people do not like it or want to move there or even visit there. I'm cool with that.

I just know what works for me....and where I want to be.

A toast to you ma'am!

In a perfect world it would indeed be ideal to do one's homework. There is no arguing with that. Perhaps my skin was a bit thin...your points are taken.

Each person has unique expectations and even very personal ways to react to the same environment. It's the same story of the "half empty" or "half full" glass. When you move for work reasons, you can overlook certain personal dislikes because you job is more important. When you move for personal reasons, you look more carefully at things that make you happy or unhappy. Not even a husband and wife have the same reactions to a new place. The trick is to be able to prioritize, from most important to less important and be able to compromise and forget about trying to be "perfect". Even after careful planning things can still go wrong, but "what the heck", you can always start all over again. That's the fun part of life, that it's unpredictable. No need to fight about it, have fun disagreeing.

What I mean is....I hate fish tacos! Bleeeccchhhh! And that is what is considered 'mexican' food in Southern Cali. That is a staple. There are whole restaraunts that revolve around fish tacos! Of course, there are other things on the menu...but none of it is true New Mexican food. And, of course, no one outside of NM has a clue what you mean by "red or green"....LOL!
And, no, I'm afraid throwing "a few habaneros in" is gonna help the Mexican food in Cali. Actually, it really is authentic, b/c the Mexicans are the ones who started the whole fish taco thing...plus the food they prepare is so not New Mexico. It is true....you can't get our food anywhere but NM. Unless you make it yourself, which is what I do when I'm there for an extended time....

I LOVE New Mexican food. I adore it, I crave it.

But ... though I do not consider them New Mexican in any way .... it is hard to even consider them Mexican.....but I have to confess I do love fish tacos.

Can't we love both?

You're right! New Mexican food have to include green chilis, pinions and blue corn which do not grow outside NM. Tacos were invented so that one does not have to have a fork to eat food, anything rolled with a tortilla can be considered a taco, some people on the West coast invented the "fish tacos", I personally dislike them and prefer the ones made other kinds of meat (beef, pork, chicken, tongue, chicharrones, brains, tripe, whatever), but what makes a taco good is the sauce, which has to be freshly made and the tortilla too. In Mexico most tacos are soft, the ones with hard tortilla shell are more common in the U.S. "Flautas" are a form of deep fried tacos.

Of course you can! Lots of people love fish tacos and the 'local' mexican food.... Just, I was born and raised on our own 'home-cookin'...true chili and sopas, etc.....sigh, they don't even know what a sopapilla is in Cali! Too bad, totally their loss.
It is funny though, when I do a full blown New Mexican meal in San Diego, our out of state friends there, love it! The local San Diego people freakout, b/c you got it....it's "too hot"! And that is using mild mixed w/medium, LOL.
Oh well, too each their own.... I do love all the frsh seafood we get in San Diego! Yum!

Actually, fish tacos have been a staple south of the border forever. As long as there were fisherman and tortillas, LOL. Rubio's (Ralph Rubio) is one of the first to introduce them to San Diego, now, Rubio's is a chain w/locations in several western states! And of course, like w/anything else, there are taco stands almost on every corner, fish being the primary filling; now there are other choices, but fish tacos are what it's all about, here, anyway!
