Gay Santa Fe?
I just spent 4 days in sta fe. when i was there, i had my friend look up gay bars in the city. he found 3 on a website, but i only found 1 of those in the downtown area. what exactly do gay folk do for fun in sta fe? is there a gay community?
i also thought food, gasoline, etc in sta fe were surprisingly expensive!, much more than i would have thought.

I think we have a large gay community here in Santa Fe. I think they do the same things the heterosexual people do here. Santa Fe has an adequate nightlife, however if you compare it to other locales, it has far less of a bar scene. My view is that most people who enjoy living in Santa Fe don't need the bar scene, or have grown up and moved on to other pursuits. Those who enjoy the outdoors, the arts, reading and intellectual pursuits love Santa Fe. Those who need to be in bars all night carousing probably will not think Santa Fe is as much "fun".

You know, after I read your post, I went and googled "Santa Fe Gay Bars", and this list popped up.
http://santafe.gaycities.com/bars/
I was pretty surprised to see the Cowgirl Hall of Fame, El Farol, and the Pink Adobe Dragon Room on there. Sure there might be some gay people frequenting those places, but they are far from "gay bars". Maybe the list means "gay friendly".
The only place on the list I can see that may clearly be a "gay bar" is the Silver Starlight, which is located in a gay retirement community.
I have never heard of the Matador, and didn't know we had a hidden punk bar in town. I'll have to check that out and report back later.

If you can't have fun in SF, you're not trying. I have something to do almost every night. Whether it's live music, a lecture, theater, or a number of other things, there is a lot to do. Pick up the Reporter and the Pasatiempo.
There are no "gay" bars in SF. There may be bars that are frequented more by gays, but since The Senate Lounge closed, there really hasn't been a gay bar in town.
The Matador is a funky dive. Go check it out. Everything from goths and punks to guys in suits. Very eclectic.

wehotex - Your best bet would be to make contact with some other gay folks here; I know a slew and they could tell you a lot more than those of us not as well connected.
From my perspective gay folk do what straight folk do to have fun here (with obvious differences ). It's a very accepting town insofar as lifestyle choices are concerned.....

wehotex: FYI there is front page article in today's "Neighbors" section of the Santa Fe New Mexican about Wenda Watch. Wenda came to Santa Fe via San Francisco and also had her own show on QTV (*****TV) in Australia, and headlines a weekly drag show here that has had a full house ever since opening back in April. It's at The Lodge (just off St. Francis). According to Wenda "When I came to Santa Fe I had heard there was this thriving gay community, but I couldn't even find a gay bar [sounds like what you said webhotex]. It's been my mission to help create a gay nightlife scene here where we can celebrate who we are and get together."
From this story it sounds likes she's doing fabulously well!

Hope you find this useful......

Santa Fe has no gay scene. The "BIG" party that happened at the Lodge on Oct 31 was only a disappointment. The crowd was great and people where ready to have an amazing time; The Lodge however did not. Terrible music, bad choice of shows.. It was not a gay event.
Santa Fe desperately needs to have a gay scene.. A gay bar at least; let me re-phrase. A gay bar for this generation; no offense to the Starlight Lounge (you're wonderful), however being in your 20 -40's a gay retirement bar is not what we crave. Santa Fe needs somewhere you could go and feel 100% free to kiss your partner or hold their hands without any concern. Try doing that at the gay friendly places; you'll still get some form of negative energy from some folks. It's not about 'hooking up'. It's about feeling and being free.

If you want an active gay scene with gay bars, nightlife, etc., don't go to Santa Fe, Flagstaff, Sedona, etc. From what I've been told, none of these towns have any gay bars, but this is secondhand info and I don't know. Albuquerque - ??????
This is small town America in states that score very high on the Conscientious Personality type, and very low on the Open To Experience type. Sadly, Arizona voted down gay marriage. Different story when it comes to gay bars in Tucson, Phoenix, Vegas. It's too bad for gays and lesbians up here, because the percentage of gays is very high in rural liberal cities in northern AZ and northern NM, and also in the Verde Valley, AZ. as they're attracted to the outdoor recreation experiences. Definitely a new business opportunity here in Flagstaff if the City Council would take away restrictions on new businesses (TOM STOP SAYING THAT! LOL ...Morgan Hagaman for Flagstaff City Council in 2010!).
