I think you can carry in National Forest, but you probably can't discharge firearms there. I believe it is state by state, so it would be wise to make sure you know the law where you are going. If you are going to carry a weapon, make sure it is registered, and you know how to use it. I think it is highly advisable to have it in a case of some kind.

I'm not a hunter, so I don't know the firearms laws in National Forests for that, but once again, make sure you know the law before you go shooting anything on public land.

P.S. New Mexico is an "extended domain" state. This means your vehicle is an extension of your residence. You can carry a concealed weapon in your vehicle. If you are not licensed to carry a concealed weapon, you may not exit your vehicle with the weapon concealed.

Mike - I did some quick on-line checking and the stats seem to indicate that Santa Fe's crime rates are at the national average. As you can see below, Denver (which a lot of folks on this forum seem to compare us with) is a lot worse. And then I looked at Boulder, which is more comparable and it's the same as Santa Fe for violent crime, and worse for property crime. All this to say that there is, unfortunately, a "dark underbelly" pretty much everywhere - as evil-doers (gosh I hate to use a GWB term) have vehicles and know no geographic bounds....

Santa Fe is actually one of the lowest cities in the state when it comes to measuring crime index, per Moving.com. Using 100 as a national crime index rating, for instance, Las Cruces scores a 132, Las Vegas 157, Grants 150, Albuquerque 145, Roswell 141, Hobbs 139, Farmington 131, Gallup 122, Artesia 107, Hobbs 106, Deming 97, Portales 92, Taos 91, Carlsbad 87, Raton 70, Alamogordo 69, Los Lunas 69, Belen 68, Silver City 55. Rio Rancho is next at 42, then Santa Fe at 39. Los Alamos is the lowest of major towns (over 10k population) at 27.

Espanola is at 32, 2nd lowest for a city over 10K.

We didn't need to turn this thread into a debate about the amount of reported crime in Santa Fe. I don't need statistics. I can perceive the amount of crime by living in a place for a long enough amount of time, reading the newspaper, and walking the streets.

I can tell you my perception of Santa Fe is that it is a relatively safe to live in as to violent crimes, but that we have our fair share of property crimes. I can walk the streets here at night in almost any neighborhood in town and not feel intimidated. Having said that, I will also say that we do have our share of thugs that will not hesitate to break your windshield to get into your vehicle if you leave anything valuable in plain view.

The anamoly I see here is that if you leave your vehicle on trailheads around here, there's a good chance your vehicle may be broken into. I have talked to enough people that have had this happen that it seems to be a fairly common occurrence. Now I see that the breaking into vehicles may have recently ramped up to acts of violence against individuals on our hiking paths and camping spots. It's a progression I have noticed, and am disturbed by.

I also think to a certain extent, the City tries to hide its underbelly, because it is very worried that if Santa Fe is perceived to be dangerous, tourists will go elsewhere.

I would bet much crime in Espanola goes unreported which skews their stats.

I think such is the case in rural New Mexico, in general. Towns, for instance, that aren't incorporated, and have the county sheriff for first responder rather than town police. Dona Ana County has small towns like this down the Mesilla Valley.
