Personally I usually go back into the wilderness anyway, so this is mostly a non-issue for me. It is sad as you say though that people cannot feel safe in a campground anymore. Our society has become very brutal, and if you want to avoid becoming a victim, you better remain alert and be ready to defend yourself.

I appreciate your pretty solid information and opinion for this, {and your timing with wit, well, at those times too LOL  }
This can be a rather 'touchy' subject in some states.
Thank you!
Tia Dalma
And thanks to the others who offered good information here too.

As a side note here - I drove over 30000k miles, visited over 35 National Parks, 25 state parks, and 20 National Forests in more than 20 states this past year. The strangest, most concerning folk I saw in any campsite (from front country parking lots to remote backpacking) with concern for my safety was in Norther CA. and Santa Fe's Hyde State Park (on the way up to Santa Fe Ski area). I don't carry guns, have never had a problem, but I was "approached" at Hyde - in camp at dusk, by a very glossy eyed, broken down truck, no tent, wandering, odd fellow. A couple of nights prior, at +/- 4am a car of drunk ass kids jamming there stereo tried to set up camp next to me.....tried.
I think Hyde is to0 close/accessible to the city - much like the majority of CA.'s parks.
However, I am going to get a concealed weapons permit.....before O'badman takes away our right to arm!

I also have never owned a gun, but will be purchasing one!! I'm thinking a Remington 870P MAX, tactical shotgun. (recommended by a friend in the military).
Quite sad one has to even consider purchasing something like this.
The only real trouble I've ever had, was an individual attempting to break into my house, while I was home. Long story made short... I chased him down on foot, tackled him and waited for the police to come pick him up.

read the article.
people are trying to live normal lives but they are in denial about the state of the country.
the streets are very mean. public transport will not flourish nor will public facilities be used.
its like the 1st mad max movie with mel gibson, society meltdown with people trying to act like everything is the same, the vacation to grama's house.
people need to defend themselves but self defense has been criminalized. the concept of punishment has been banned from society.
time out, aka confinement or incarceration is now viewed as the only appropriate punishment and its not working.

If this guy had been "armed to the teeth" he most likely would have been killed... since the first indication he had of a problem was getting a shotgun waved in his face.
Many years ago when I spent practically all of my time "camping" (not in camp grounds though) I started off carrying a .357. But then I pondered when I might actually use it. I wasn't going to greet everyone I met with a gun in my hand... and I'd rarely if ever have a chance of getting it once I discovered that I needed it. So what was the point? I got rid of it...
Instead of being paranoid, I greeted everyone as a friend... regardless of how they looked or how they were acting... or whether they were waving a gun around. I never had a bit of trouble... except with cops and rangers who assume you must be guilty of something.

Just as an aside, are these roving thugs in Hyde Park and other environs in proximity to Santa Fe actually from there? Or are they coming from outlying areas? I can't form an opinion on it, because I don't live up there, but am curious nonetheless, becuase I visited there at least a half dozen times and have hiked New Hyde twice.
