I was looking at the Santa Fe webcam earlier and one of the images shows a large building of some sort being constructed downtown. It looks to me like it's way over 5 stories high.
Hmmm - the most recent construction was probably the Santa Fe Community Convention Center. It look tall but is in keeping with the height restrictions imposed by the city. I think it's primarily a two-story complex. The other thing that's going on is the face-lift for the Cathedral (sand-blasting, etc) so that structure looks like it's wrapped up in gauze. Because the bell towers are fairly tall I wonder if that's what you are looking at and because of the wrapping it looks like the entire edifice is very tall.
Rest assured, nothing is being built in the historic downtown (or anywhere else to my knowledge) that is (gasp) five stories tall....
GSFe - yep, that's the one! It looked funky with all of that wrapped around. Thought it was a skyscraper going up. I've seen some buildings around the Santa Fe area that are more than 4 stories high. What are the zone limitations right now for constructing large buildings? Do you think these restrictions will hold? :P
To my knowledge the general height restriction is 24 feet, with a variance allowed for the steeples or towers on church and government buildings. Also there can't be more than 3 stories. While the city may allow a variance,I believe they require the height which exceeds the restriction to be stepped back from the rest of the building so that the building doesn't appear to be taller and so that the sky view is not restricted. I may be totally wrong on this latter part.....
As to whether the height restrictions will ever change, who knows? But, with the city wanting to keep that je ne sais quoi Santa Fe charm that keeps on attracting transplants and tourists to our little city, I don't see skyscrapers (anything over 3-4 stories) in our future anytime soon....
I personally hope we don't ever see the height restrictions for buildings or signs changed.
I AM one of the ones who thinks the charm of Santa Fe is because of the architecture and the restrictions in the building laws. I don't ever want it to look like every other city!!!!!
Once the things that make Santa Fe unique get changed, they will never be able to change it all back.

What is that image in downtown Santa Fe? I live here and i know the answer!
We are remodeling the St Francis Cathedral, right off of the plaza, across the street from the oldest hotel in Santa Fe, La Fonda. hopefully it won't be up too long.... Now you know!
