Another woman attacked in santa fe (crime rate, credit, house)

How interesting to read in The Santa Fe New Mexican yesterday that yet another--the 3rd within 3 weeks--woman in Santa Fe has been attacked and hit in the head "with a blunt object". [This does not include the 82 year old woman at 1600 St Michaels Drive who was merely mugged--not hit in the head]. Must be the "hit-you-ladies-in-the-head-bandit"--although one woman at 1600 St Michaels was attacked by 3 men at once and hit in the head. This latest one was at the busy shopping center at 500 Cordova Rd. Women in Santa Fe need to protect themselves from the increasing frequency of public physical attacks on them here. Perhaps the Santa Fe Womens' Club will sponsor self-defense courses. Women need to equip themselves with whistles on chains around their necks and pepper spray. I just bought two cans of pepper spray at K-Mart---by the way KMart was the scene a few weeks ago of a security guard attacked by two women--one of whom the Santa Fe New Mexican reported "kicked him in the head." Nice to see the last few days increased patrols in the KMart-Lowe's shopping plaza.

...and a couple of weeks ago this from the Santa Fe Reporter: The New York Times survey found New Mexico to be the third most corrupt state in the US. My daughter tells me she saw a report on aol that New Mexico is now rated the THIRD HIGHEST state crime rate in the US.

You need to get a life. Do you sit around behind barred windows, jumping at every noise? Do you sit in the dark in the morning waiting for the paper so you can go immediately to the police blotter?

If you live in fear, you aren't living. There is no where in this country that you can go and get away from crime. It is here. You can let it control you life or take control of it.

I have lived here all my life and have been the victim of one crime. My house was broken into 25 years ago. And it was partly my fault because the window was broken and I just put a cardboard in it and went out for the night. Should have just left the front door wide open.

If you live your life in fear, what kind of life is that?

Just be careful -- lock your doors, stay out of iffy parts of town, be alert when you are out and about, especially at night.

I have not felt unsafe in Santa Fe, but I don't go out looking for trouble either.

I can't live my life that way.

To Grace Gratz credit..I happen to appreciate the blog. Some people simply feel safer than others...be it where they came from, how they grew up..or just the confidence they have in their own mode of self protection.
I enjoy hearing about what is going on in the SF area.... although I am sorry for the fact that these incidents happen. I come from a city of 140,000...we never lock our doors..car or house... frequently stop to hand change to hitchhikers and never think twice about going out for a late night walk alone. Its eye opening to hear how things function elsewhere.

I must admit that after looking over the Bureau of Justice Crime Data. Santa Fe appears to be a bit on the high side as far as crime is concerned. I was not at all impressed by the violent crime rate/s! Property crime is one thing, but violent crime (especially rape and murder) is inexcusable!! Perhaps the great majority of these crimes are committed on the "wrong side of the tracks"?

In any case, it looks like they have some work to do.
