I'm just curious about something-- on the BLS website, for December unemployment statistics (granted, already a little bit out of date), Santa Fe comes in #20 out of 369 metropolitan areas for the lowest unemployment rate-- at 3.9%. That's even better than Albuquerque, which was at 4.7%. Why is this the case? Why is Santa Fe, at least according to this particular metric, doing relatively "less bad" than 95% of the rest of the nation? Are there actually jobs there? Does this data square with your real life observations?

I think you will find NM relatively liberal compared to either TX or UT.

"There are dozens, if not hundreds of movies with far more violence, nudity, and foul language that the same theaters had no trouble playing."
It is nothing but hypocrisy when the same theater that has no problem playing movies chock full of sex, drugs & violence would turn down "Brokeback Mountain" , a movie with very little sex, drugs or violence, simply because the main characters were gay.
And please, don't get me wrong...I am not a "liberal". I am more of a Libertarian who tends to lean left on social issues, right on fiscal issues.

I would guess it has more to do with $$$......as I understand it, the movie was about two gay COWBOYS, one of whom was married, maybe both.
With West Texas, it just goes against the prevailing grain/culture, if you will. Everybody that I talked to was not about to go spend their money on such a movie.
I don't know whether or not they refused to show the same in NM.....

I wasn't talking about you personally, I was talking about the theater in Utah.

Really?
And you posted it right after quoting Cathy and I.
My mistake, I guess.

It would be nice to see this topic not discussed here. I don't see that the topic of the movie has anything to do with SF or NM, except maybe the movie was localized here, but after all it had to occur somewhere. Pick a place...

Sorry to be blunt, but would you all shut up? Nobody cares about your political p.o.v. on some movie one way or the other. I asked a question about Santa Fe's economy, now it's already buried. Let me repeat it here:
I'm just curious about something-- on the BLS website, for December unemployment statistics (granted, already a little bit out of date), Santa Fe comes in #20 out of 369 metropolitan areas for the lowest unemployment rate-- at 3.9%. That's even better than Albuquerque, which was at 4.7%. Why is this the case? I don't know the answer but I have a theory. Many people I meet are retired or they bring their jobs with them and work from home. There isn't much industry here so if people lose their jobs, maybe they move and take the unemployment statistic with them. If I lose my job in this economy I don't expect to be able to find a job here that would pay me enough to pay the mortgage. I'd look in ABQ or sell my house and move back to PA :-(
