This portrait of a Native American Woman was photographed in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I rarely shoot portraits of people I do not know. This scene was a chance encounter that caught my eye in a fleeting moment. It was the end of the day in downtown Santa Fe, and the local vendors were closing shop. I saw this woman stop briefly at a table she was clearing. I was enthralled by the way the evening light revealed the character in her face, and draped gentle shadows in her sweatshirt. The textured, shadowed Adobe wall in the background added another interesting element to the composition. For no more than a couple of seconds, I had this marvelous composition. I quickly raised my camera and managed to capture one frame before the woman left the scene and resumed her work.
This photo is one of my personal favorites from New Mexico. It is an honest, yet dignified moment, and remains one of my favorite photographs to date. -
