Default Fort Union National Monument & Springer NM area?

Has anyone been to the Fort Union National Monument or Springer NM who might have some suggestions of what to see, where to stay and eat in the general area? We'd like to take a week-end trip up that way and maybe stay 1 or 2 nights.

Thanks in advance

If you are near Springer, there is an old hotel with a cute restaurant. Not sure what the rooms are like. Otherwise Springer is pretty dead. You could drive a fairly short distance to Las Vegas (NM) which has a nice restored old hotel on the plaza. Las Vegas also has some interesting old architecture -- a number of movies have been shot there. LV also has a couple of new motels -- if that is what you like.

I am new to this, but it seems like maybe the New Mexico forum might be more appropriate and get you more replies? That is a question, not a statement. But you get more responses from people who knew places like Clayton and could tell you what is there.

Thanks Santa Fe. We did go and stayed and ate at the old hotel there. Liked the restaurant and good food too. I wanted to get some photos of old buildings, barns etc and asked some of the local folks for suggestions. Very friendly and got lots of suggestions and shots. Made it to the fort as well and poked around Las Vegas too. Yes, some very nice old architecture.

You're right, the NM forum probably would have been a better place to post- I didn't know it existed at the time .
