Default What Is The Santa Fe Weather Like?

What is the weather like in this area? I have read that winters can be pretty cold, but what is cold. I am coming from Northern Illinois where for us below zero windchills are common. How about summers?

You might want to post this to the specific forum for Santa Fe.

SANTA FE FORUM

It'll get the attention of those who actually live there as opposed to those who visit here in the more general threads.

Until this does get moved, I'll say that I moved here from Vermont and Wisconsin. We get some snow. Santa Fe city gets maybe 10-20 inches in a typical year with no real accumulation. Every few years you may get a single heavy snow. Since I came here five years ago, I have never used my heavy winter coat.

The weather is very dependent up altitude and most of Santa Fe is about 7,000 feet. You live higher somewhere around here and you'll see more cold and snow.

Summers. The hottest it has ever been in Santa Fe is 99 F or 100 F depending upon what source you believe. It can get hotter in lower places like the Pojoaque Valley.

How often has it been 99 or 100º in Santa Fe?

Dobelover, I grea up in western New York State where winter is really winter - cold and lots and lots of snow.

I would consider Santa Fe winters mild by northern standards.

Yes, we get snow. But not like the northern U.S.

This map will show you weather stats for a bunch of locations over the entire state. Just mouse over the red dots and click the one you want.

New Mexico

I live in Ruidoso which is at a similar elevation, and I grew up in Illinois. There is no comparison. Winter in NM is *sunny* as well as being ~10deg warmer during the day even in SF. When it snows in the winter, it usually melts in a day or two. You don't get the arctic storms here, so a night below zero is rare.

Weather from May-Oct is nearly perfect. Mostly sunny with brief PM showers every other day or so from late June-Sept (rainy season), with highs ~80... rarely over 90, and if it is then it is very dry. Lows are in the 50s. In May and Oct high temps will run in the 60s and 70s. Usually light winds in summer.

March and April tends to be the dry and windy season, and can be the most annoying IMO.

When I moved here from Michigan, I couldn't believe that folks here thought the winters were cold. I was amazed how they reacted to an inch or two of snow that almost disappears by noon the next day. After 11 years, though, my skin has apparently thinned. A visit to Michigan one January when the temps never got into positive territory and the wind blown snow pelted you every time you went outside convinced me that I made the right choice.

The best change, as rruff said, sunny winter days, not the dreary grays we learned to hate, and no slush.

100 F either once or never depending upon which source you believe.

99 F -- I would say not very often but frankly I don't know.

That is for 7000 feet. At 6000 feet it is a little warmer or hotter all year round.
