This dates me.... I haven't eaten in Maria's since the original Maria's back in the '70's. I believe it is in the same location. Back then when we came down from the mountains we would go to Tomasita's, Guadalupe Cafe, Josie's or Maria's. In recent years I have expanded my SF dining experience only slightly but have still never made it back to Maria's.

Bongo - Now you've got me reconsidering. That guy on the Las Mayas website, Antonio Mendoza, is the one I saw. Unfortunately, they don't show any pics of the actual restaurant facility. Guess I'll just have to come back and check them both out in person. Thanks to you and Santa Fe for indulging my bad memory.

On a separate topic - has Rancho de Chimayo re-opened after the fire?

Yes, and the one time I was there it seemed to be doing well.

You topped me, since you came up with the restaurant.

Maria's has some of the most non-tourist food in town and is a big local hangout. Many locals eat there, which shows how good the food is. Just because it's in a bunch of tourist guides doesn't mean it's bad. I love the green chile chicken enchiladas!

My kids come home to visit and we always have to go to Maria's. It's one of our favorite places to eat. The tent sounds familiar but if it was Maria's it was before they added the room on the front--I think it might have been a tent prior to making it permanent. I left SF for five years and they changed it between 03-08. How long ago were you here? There is no tent now.
