Trying to figure out if it's better to pay to transport it all or buy new stuff as we need it.

help!! we have 3 weeks and i am starting to freak out! i don't know if i even CAN get rid of stuff this quick!!

Im sure if you advertise for an estate sale you could get rid of some of the things. Maybe weed out the smaller things..like end tables, bookshelves, display cases or china cabinets, maybe older tvs you won't need?..are there items you aren't using on a daily basis or things you can do without? Id leave those things and replace them as you need to. Keep in mind, you'll be dealing with a lot just making the transition here. You will have many things to do before you get settled. Do you really want to add furniture shopping onto the list? Id try to weed out some things you won't miss, but don't go overboard or make rash decisions. Don't WORRY about it, everything will be just fine. You are worrying about something that doesn't need to be worried about..you're moving to paradise : )

Mind telling me the name of the movers? I'm in NY and eventually plan on moving.

I think that with just three weeks left until you move, and all of the stresses that go along with that, I wouldn't pile on the added stressor of trying to unload stuff at the last minute. Maybe if it were two months away...maybe.

Let 'em move it. Deal with it when you get here.

My mom was in the same boat and decided to have an auction here and now she is down in Port Charlotte buying all new stuff. The movers wanted $6000.00 to move her. I think that is way to high . I offered to drive a Uhaul for her but she decided to go the auction route.

That's a lot of stuff. Sell it on Craig's List. We already unloaded tons of stuff there. We really scaled back. We're only keeping what can't be replaced and furniture too expensive to replace. But we're going to use Pods, not a conventional moving Co.

i have 3 bedrooms sets that are definitely going and with PODS i have to lug them myself i priced it and it wasn't much more for this company that was going to do the work for me.

i just have QUANTITY i guess. i have the kids in camp for the next 2 weeks lets see what i can get rid of I sold the drumset today - yippee.

the company we used had our load estimated and they said 8000 lbs. that was before it was all packed. i had 2 other companies estimate and they were both around 13000 lbs. so the day before we moved and the boxes were all stacked and we had disposed or sold of what we were not bringing i had them come back and re estimate it. he came up with 10000 lbs. when they got the actual weight (empty truck vs full truck) it was around 15,000 lbs. they ended up splitting the difference.

when you are trying to decide what or what not to take. first ask your self if you really need it and when did you use it last. next, so you have room for it. then to make the final decision figure out what you are paying per pound to move it. divide the weight that they came up with into the total cost. so if you have 10,000 lbs and they want $7500.00 to move it then its costing you 75 cents a pound.

the company we used at first seemed fantastic. they were the only ones that would put my pickup and car in the trailer with the home goods so i did not have to worry about coordinating a transport for the vehicles. seemed real good until they got here to Fl and the back window of my pickup was smashed and the sides were all scratched. turned out to be $4000.00 worth of damage. they and their insurance finally paid it off after 2 months.

then to top it off after having them come out the day before and get an actual look at the load they sent a truck that was to small and had to follow up with a second load that took 3 weeks to get here.

We're 11 months out, and getting rid of stuff already. Have you found PODS to be pricey compared to others? We are looking at http://www.upack.com/for their pod equivalent, or possibly even trailer by the foot.
