john, you are fully enetitled to your opinion which i fully respect. whether you ride a harley or a pogo stick makes no difference the day you slide up the road on your nose and mash your brain.

as a keen motorcyclist i hope this never happens to you or anyone.sadly it does to some and the consequence are pretty horrific

Bottom line is, this is America and it is my choice. I do carry a helmet and have worn it at times. When I throw my leg over, helmet or not, there is a chance that I will not make it hom, I know that. It is a risk that I am aware of and accept. All I'm saying is that I don't want some suit & tie trying to make my decisions for me. Let those who ride decide.

For the sake of argument, if everyone would shut up and drive, I would have a better chance of making it home. Why doesn't big brother ban all cell phone usage while a car is in motion.

There is a saying in the ER. It is a little uncivilized. "The difference between wearing a helmet or not, is simply whether there will be an open or closed casket."

Just saying.

So then why is it not my choice if I wear a seat belt or not? I don't wear a seat belt and I get a ticket.

I think its perfectly ok for anyone not to wear helmets and seat belts as long as they have their accidents all by themselvs and have insurance to cover their medical and other care . However accidents tend to involve more than one party. If for example the idiot, w.o. helmet, doing the wheelie on I95 as I described earlier had dumped on the 6 or whatever lane interstate right in front of us it would have involved a lot more than him and his motorcycle. Granted wearing a helmet wouldnt have done a bit of difference but I think that if he had worn one he wouldnt be doing those stupid things either

Because the suit & tie people passed a law that controls what you do. Pretty unfair, huh?

You are correct and I do carry plenty of insurance to cover all of those costs. I will also remind you that Harley riders are a bit different than the punks riding the crotch rockets. I bet you haven't seen a Harley going down the interstate on one wheel.

sorry John, whilst i do understand about the right to make decisions, what about the rights of the people who have to pick you up and clean up the mess when you leave your brains splatterred on the tarmac ? thast not a pleasant job by any means
Any helmet is better than none and even your 2 wheeled Harley can get T boned by some old duffer taking a wrong turn.....

Every parametic that signs up for his/her job has to be ready for anything, just as the doctors in the ER. They also get paid very well. ( I can't believe that I have stooped to this level) You old timers please watch out for me, you should be able to hear me before you see me.

I am done with this subject. Basically, if you don't ride, I don't care for your opinion. It would be the same as me giving advice on something I don't know anything about. Kinda like a priest giving marriage advice - never been married and all.

Going out for a loooong ride.

LOL! I know a lot of suit and tie people that drive motorcycles. :-)

I have to agree with you on this one. My husband rode a Harley for many, many years before he married me. He had helmets, and wore them on occasion, but most of the time he went helmetless due to the diminished peripheral vision when wearing one. He wore full leather even in the heat of summer and was a cautious rider. I think it should be personal choice, just as I think it should be personal choice whether someone wants to buckle up. Too many laws in this country being introduced for our "own good", when these laws have nothing to do with protection of the populace and have everything to do with the welfare of special interest groups.
