I think it is terrible that one of the first things done by Mayflower passengers was desecrate an Indian grave and steal the goods buried there. I hope John, Dick and Frank were not in on that sad episode.

Interesting thread. For me it depends on the context in which it is used. In terms of baseball dont you dare call a redsox fan a yankee....... if used in a derogatory manner toward me I just remind the moron that we yankees won the war......

Default Im a Yankee

well I was born and raised in Connecticut so yes I am a yankee,my parents, were born in Ct, and New Hampshire, so I guess they are yankee's too.
Grandparents other than my paternal grandfather were born in New Hampshire and Penn. respectivally. Grandpa Williams born in Alabama.
so have a little southern in me I guess.
The reason we bought in Florida like millions of other people is because of the climate(not right now though) holy crap its cold down there!!!!!!
im hoping by the time I fly down on the 23rd it warms up a bit.
But Yankee I am and will always be, and no I dont find it offensive

Well . . . I think I was good . . . but that was a couple days ago, and a few beers . . . so - Nope, not sure.

You totally need to check out World of Beer, if you haven't already. You see all these men holding thier beer lists like grocery lists.

Default Not so bad

Compared to some of the other things I have been called over the years, Yankee could be a compliment.

Lady,

I don't really drink as much as I profess - I do like Yeungling, and if I drink a light beer I now like Bud Lite Lime. What I like most about having a beer isn't the beer as much as being in a social setting, relaxing, and being with friends.

Of course, if you press me . . . I could go for a more intimate atmosphere. LOL - I'd flirt more - but I'm NOT ALLOWED! Mrs. Cool is watching, and she knows my wife. Maybe if I wear these cool shades though , she won't recognize me.

Shades won't do it BH. You're pretty unforgettable, and quite an imposing figure. Why, I'll bet if you showed up on somebody's doorstep unannounced their wife might even call 911!!!!

I will be singing Battle Hymn of the Republic marching through the streets dressed in my Union uniform. Would that be not advisable to do in the South?

Lifelong southerner here. I think the term gets broadened & diluted, as do many words. Southerners often refer to anyone not southern as a yankee. But, as many of you mention, I also read that the term was coined referring to New Englanders. Of course, New York didn't help that blurring when they named their team the Yankees. I think some Europeans used to refer to Americans in general as Yankees, didn't they?

BTW, you're welcome in my town, my neighborhood, my home, etc. But please watch the "people down here" remarks. Some people probably don't mean any harm, but I have heard northerners talk in public places about how stupid southerners are, how we don't speak properly or how we drive, etc. That is very insulting.
