First a disclaimer. I don't know anyone from the VPD.
Saying that, I do know a few Police Officers, including my son. Using the Sarasota PD as an example, the hiring process weeds out all but the best candidates. As with any occupations there are average and above average employees.
Your comments paint with a broad brush. Assuming you live in Venice would call someone other than a VPO if someone was breaking into your home?

I can actually see both sides of the issue. Venice PD has been in the news quite a bit lately. From issues with the chief to other problems within the dept.

Venice Florida! - The firing of Michael Frassetti, part 1

That being said, I would assume that the majority of the officers, etc are doing a great job.

I have read stories that are not that positive about the Venice police dept
that was what my comment was based on--
the stories are out there--I did not write them--

In Venice, further scrutiny for police | HeraldTribune.com

Recording of Venice chief could add to pressure | HeraldTribune.com

Consultant to examine Venice police claims | HeraldTribune.com

there could be a personal bias in some of those web sites
it seems the police chief is under investigation
the +dozen times we have been to Venice/Nokomis area since our daughter married/moved--we have seen a police car maybe 3 times...I don't remember a very visible presence of police at all

At least the girl had sense enough to fight and get away. Usually once they are taken to a new location, things get bad. I hope they catch the scumbag and let a woman cop beat the crap out of him.

Young girls should always travel with someone else though, if at all possible. I have 2 daughters, 19 & 22 and I can't even imagine what I would do if someone grabbed one of them. Actually, I can imagine what I would do, but that's a whole new thread.

I don't know why the Venice Police Department is being brought up in this thread.
As everyone in Venice knows, the YMCA where the incident took place is not within the city limits and is covered by the Sarasota County Sheriffs Office.
Like I said, I hope they catch this creep and soon. PixiStix mentioned that Garden Elementary is directly across the street from the Y and I'm sure there are more than a few parents in the area are shocked and nervous.
