Thanks for calling Mote. Our numbers of shore birds were dipping the last few years, so it kind of would be odd if they were the sole provider of the fecal matter.
Maybe some old sewer pipes have some leaks...

I was thinking, maybe too many people are peeing in the Gulf at the same time?

Urine is not really the problem I think--it is relatively sterile when it comes out of the body because of how it is processed...
Is urine sterile? - Naked Scientists Discussion Forum
people who have been stranded on the ocean or even Aron Rolston the guy from 127 Hours have drunk their urine and survived

it would be too many babies pooping in diapers...

I wondered if there might be problem with boats dumping their sewage vs having it pumped out...

If Siesta and Turtle beach are like Venice Island, and they most likely are, the problem could be old septic tanks that leech into the gulf. Happens from time to time on Venice Island.

All that white sand wont make up for fecal bacteria in the water, a concentration large enough to concern authorities didnt come from a few boaters and diapers.

I spoke with Mote again later in the afternoon and they said Nokomis Beach was safe. As long as there were no warning flags out. So, I'm gonna be at the beach at noon today. I'll be right down from the lifeguard stands.

Seems they still don't have a cause.

This statement kind of makes me think twice, though. Yuck!

Hope it's all clear when we come back in April!
