New to FL this year so please excuse the ignorance of the question.
How long will the gulf waters along Sarasota/Charlotte/Lee (assuming your affected too) counties be brown, ugly and smell like pond water?
I'm assuming this is caused by the water release from Okeechobee but again, first year here so that's a guess. I fell in love with the clear blue-green waters before and upon moving here and this week it's just been nasty and comparable to going to a big stinky pond with waves. Had a few days off from work and was super excited to spend them in the water...until I got there.
When will the beautiful gulf waters return?

It's probably more about wind direction and runoff. Runoff will cloud up the water and winds off the gulf can stir up the water. You'll probably find, though, that the water tends to be cloudier with all the rain in the summer.

6/27/14 VENICE - State health officials today said that bacteria levels in the water off Venice Beach are still unsatisfactory and a “No Swim” advisory will remain.

One of the reasons I love Englewood Beach (there are 4 beaches in E-wood) is that being on a barrier island there are many fewer homes and streets there that wash bacteria into the Gulf. Venice beaches have outfalls right on the beach so that when it rains all the road crap gets washed right into the water people swim in.

Yesterday the water at Englewood was beautiful turquoise not brown, although beautiful water can have bacteria in it.
Red tide is a different thing and has been in the Gulf since Spanish conquistadora days. It was much worse in Naples and I lived 5 miles inland and got runny eyes from it back then.
