Thumbs up Seminole Indian Reservations

I'm from the U.K. and visit Florida for about five weeks each year. We have visited most places of interest (several times) such as the Historical Village, the Florida Train Museum and the Mansion in Palmetto etc. etc.
We are quite interested in visiting a Seminole Indian Reservation but are not interested in gambling. Are there other things of interest there? When I go on the sites on the internet they mostly seem to be keyed to Casinos. We're more interested in the history and crafts, I have seen some of their crafts in your museums and I was very impressed, being a crafts person myself.
We stay in Ellenton so how far would the nearest Reservation be to us? I think there is one in Tampa. Do they have shops where they sell their wares? I am particularly interested in buying moccasin shoes, my son bought some in Canada and loved them, but ofcourse Seminole Indians may not have worn that style. I would also be interested in any other places of interest that you Floridians may know of and I don't.
May I also say how much we enjoy our time in Florida, how welcome we feel and how wonderful the people are. So friendly, we love our time there.

You probably do not want to drive this far (about 3 hours), but the Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation is really amazing. Not just for Billie Swamp Safari, but the Museum is really great and it is packed with so much info and culture and the people who work in the museum are so welcoming and really love sharing and teaching the visitors about Seminole culture.

I'm sure this is not helpful to you, but when I saw your post I was just compelled to share

Thank you Colturedmom, you have been very helpful. How far is the one you suggest from Ellenton? It appears to be just what we are looking for and to be able to visit a museum while there would be great. I'm sure the Seminole history goes way back. Any other information you or anyone else can give would really be appreciated. Many thanks

Here is a link to a place about 3 hrs south of Ellerton but I think is exactly what you are looking for. My husband, a social studies teacher, visited as part of a workshop and was very impressed with the place.

GoldenGirl54. Many thanks for your help. I will be sure to look at that site. We are getting so excited about our trip to Florida. We've been there six times and have never visited any of the Seminole Reservations but have seen articles/items about them in the museums. Your information is much appreciated.

we had a great time at the Billie Swamp Safari on a field trip, wish I knew about the museum. Maybe we will take a family trip there soon, thanks for the reminder!

jnanner We've been to America and have seen how great the people are. You all do your best that includes your government. You can't please all the people all the time! Especially in the rest of the world! England and America have always had a great alliance and I hope it continues. We love America and everything in it though I must admit that I'm not too keen on the food but that is just a small consideration, everything else is top hole. Kentucky GRILLED chicken is great! Much better than the Kentucky FRIED Chicken that we get over here. Just can't wait for my holiday to come!

Do yourself a favor and go to a Popeye chicken if you like chicken. It is way better and more of a taste of the south. Their Red beans and rice ROCK!
