Is anybody familiar with the area just to the south of downtown where there are several lots available to build on? Wanting to know if this area is "safe" for building a new home. I like the convenience of this area, but was wondering if this could be a crime zone? This is the area around Oak St.

Dear Seeki,

These are the crimes that occurred within the past month within 1 mile of Oak st:

CrimeMapping.com - National Map

Here is a list of the crimes:

Crime report for 3/1/2012 - 4/1/2012

Here is a pie chart of the types of crimes:

Trend Report for 3/1/2012 - 4/1/2012

Generally, the south end of Sarasota is safer than the north end.

Are you talking about Laurel Park? Oak and what side street? If so, it is considered a very desirable area, and is usually pretty expensive. The benefits are being able to walk to everything in the area. I used to live in that neighborhood years ago before it became trendy and expensive and back then it was FILLED with crime. I am sure today it is a lot better, but remember you are close to downtown and the downside is you have a lot of people going through the area, not just those who live there. If I were you I would talk to the neighbors around there and see how they feel about it. There are still a lot of rentals in Laurel Park and not all of them are high end.

A better, safer location is south of Mound, in the general "southside village" area, however, I don't think there are any buildable lots anywhere. Most people buy an older home and tear it down in that area.

Hope this helps!

Yes, 34239. Talking about south of Mound (US 41 at the curve) west of the Trail (US 41 and all the way down to Bay Road) As I said, the real estate is pretty pricey in any of these areas, but one of the most convenient and desirable areas in Sarasota to live for those who don't want a "planned community" so to speak.
