The North Port annual Back to School Resource Fair will be held on August 11, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Morgan Family Community Center, 6207 West Price Boulevard, North Port, FL. The event is open to anyone, but you must register early in order to receive the free backpacks and school supplies.

The June registration deadlines have passed, but they have extended registration into July. You can register at the North Port Family Service Center at 6919 Outreach Way, North Port, FL on July 6, 13, and 20 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. You will need to bring the following items with you when registering: a recent electric, water, sewer, or telephone bill showing you reside in North Port and a birth certificate, immunization records, or 2011/12 school report card to show proof of birth for each student.

When you visit the Back to School Resource Fair you must visit 10 or more exhibits and be sure to bring your registration form. A legal guardian or adult must accompany students under 16 in order to receive the backpack and school supplies. There will be more than 40 exhibitors who will provide information on programs, services, and activities available to parents and children. This includes educational and safety information. The North Port Lions Club will be offering free eye screenings. Families can register for free workshops hosted by the Sarasota County School District to help parents and guardians assist their students with homework and to improve their study skills.

This event is being sponsored by North Port’s Social Services Division. For more information you can contact them at 941-429-3700. Here is the link to the City of North Port web site http://cityofnorthport.com/index.aspx?page=552.

Each town/city does not do this, although many of them should. It is an endeavor that the City of North Port Social Services Division saw as a need and benefit to students/families in this area.

Social Services is a nonprofit governmental entity funded by the City of North Port. Additional funding sources are received through grants, generous individuals, churches, civic groups, schools and collaborative partners.

These charitable funding sources, collaborative partners, and other outreach programs enable the Social Services Division to provide assistance to families and individuals that are experiencing a short term unavoidable financial crisis.

Did you all see that every single elementary and middle school in North Port received a grade of an "A" for 2012? The grades aren't out for the high schools yet though.
