Hello everyone! My husband and I are in our 30's and have a 4 year old. We currently live in central Florida and are planning to relocate to Sarasota. Now we just need to find a neighborhood that is a good fit for us. Most likely we will rent first just to be cautious but will definitely want to buy in the near future if everything works out. We have our own business we run from home so commuting to work is not an issue. We would like to stay around $150's to $200,000 for a price point. We LOVE the downtown area but from what we have seen on the internet that would be out of our price range. Are there any family friendly neighborhoods close to downtown that would be a good fit? We'd prefer a place that didn't need a ton of work. Or are there any other neighborhoods that have that "downtown" feel without actually being in downtown? Shops, restaurants, etc. We are not really "suburb" type people! Someone recommended the woodbrook community to us as a possibility but we have not been there as of yet. Any advice on that community/area would be appreciated as well. Thanks!!

Here are some suggested Sarasota neighborhoods to help you in your search for neighborhoods closer to downtown Sarasota:

Alta Vista, which is south of Ringling, east of 301 and west of Tuttle. It's by Payne Park, which used to be the home of the baseball stadium but is now a park with sports fields, tennis walking paths and a skateboarding park. There are some pricier homes mixed in with more simple 50's and 60's ranch homes and some duplexes.

Arlington Park area - this is south of Bahia Vista, east of US41, west of Tuttle and north of South Gate. There are a lot of little neighborhood names such as Hyde Park Terrace, Loma Linda Park, La Linda Terrace, Grove Lawn, Battle & Turner, Rustic Lodge and Sunnyside Park. You'll see street names like Arlington, Floyd, Loma Linda, Prospect, Hillview & Waldemere. Most of this area is actually within the city of Sarasota city limits. You'll find a mix of homes -- 1940's bungalows, 50's Modern, 60's ranchers, 2 story homes and a few 1980's built homes. Definitely not cookie cutter style homes. There's the added bonus of Arlington Park, with it's community pool, basketball courts and other recreational activities.

South Gate area - south of Bahia Vista to Bee Ridge, mostly between Shade & Beneva - mainly flower name streets such as Wisteria, Clematis, Bougainvilla, Goldenrod. Popular with both home buyers and renters because of location - close to downtown and north Siesta Key bridge. Also Forest Lakes Country Club neighborhood, which is north of Webber running both east and west of Beneva Rd.

Then there's the actual South Gate neighborhood. South Gate residents can join the HOA and pay $99 per year to use the community center and pool, which is a historic landmark for it's design. South Gate streets include (but not limited to) names such as Homasassa, Rosewood, Tuttle Ave, Jefferson, Goldenrod, Tulip, Valencia and Key.

If you can't find something to rent in the areas above, you might also try:

There's a cluster of streets south of Bee Ridge & north of Clark Rd off of Swift such as Trinidad, Jamaica, Caymen, Austin, Parma, Herwald where you may find rentals. You are further south from downtown.

Sun Haven area off of Clark Rd & Lockwood Ridge - streets such as Yorktown, New England, Williamsburg, Concord. Again, reasonable rentals but also further south of downtown.

There are other neighborhoods that may work for you, such as Gulf Gate, but they are further away from the downtown area. Gulf Gate does have a number of little shops and restaurants in the nearby shopping center that may appeal to you.

Shopping, restaurants, etc can be found close by to pretty much every one of the neighborhoods listed above.

As always, recommend visiting for a few weeks to see what you like, then rent for a year or 2 after moving to really see what is going on. Gulf Gate and south are smokey much of the year due to open burning so best to stay close to the Gulf if looking south.
