2 easy things to remember about gators- they feed starting around dusk & never get between them & the water (i.e. their escape route). Other than that, don't stress on it, just be aware. I've seen fishermen standing waist deep in the Myakka River filled with gators. They know gators are not wired to feed during the heat of the day. They will mostly sun themselves to raise body temps during the day. Feeding is reserved for nighttime. However, I still think they are nuts... why temp fate?! There's surely a crazy gator out there that might not always follow the rules

I find Venice to be a very safe place to both bike and run. I live in Venice and daily jog throughout the communities while my son rides beside me and we have never had any concerns. We do of course avoid 41 and most major roads, but most roads have a bike lane.
If you haven't settled in at Island Walk, I would consider some of the communities to the east of 41 or north of 41 from where Island Walk is. Some of these communities, that definitely have homes at your price point, would be Pelican Pointe Golf and & Country Club, Venice Golf & Country Club, Grand Palm (this is a great new community where you could build what you want, but it is off of Center road which can be busy), or Plantation Golf & Country Club (which is a huge area just across 41 from Island Walk area). You could even consider Waterford, which is a community closer to me, off of Edmonson Rd. What I am trying to say here is that there are many options for you, but in my opinion if you haven't settled in at Island Walk, there are so many less traveled roads and communities to explore when riding on my side of 41.

Another great place to consider cycling is Legacy Trail. This trail is all asphalt and runs 12.4 miles from Venice to Sarasota. We usually jump on the trail from Laural Rd, just east of Grove Street, and you can take it north to Sarasota or south and hop on the Venetian Waterway Park. Both are great rides! Here is a link to a video of the Legacy Trail and below is a map of the Venetian Waterway Park. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=zvd63pFK6dg I hope this helps.

What is dangerous about 41. I plan on going to Venice one day with the wife, and I'm sure we will end up biking. Thanks.

41 is just a very busy road, especially in season, so we try to avoid it and ride around on some of the less populated roads, or the Legacy Trail. If we ride south on the trail we will cross 41 and get on the Venetian Waterway Park, but that's about it. Venice is beautiful, and there is so much to see. You will love it!
